Hello i posted somthing but had a crap title! Ive only just brought a fabia vrs from dealership. When on idle a faint high pitch whistle comes on when i rev the engine the noise goes away but then comes back after a bit when on idle. Also when i put my foot down the turbo makes a strange shakey whistling noise its not stupid loud, but loud enough that ive picked up on this, should i be worried?? Also should i expect any noise from the turbo, i know that question sounds stupid but ive never owned a turbo engine before.

I brought the car from rainworth skoda if any one knows of them?? many thanks

Thinking about the whistling on idle that could be the exaust but sounds just like the turbo if that shouldnt be doing that let me know please!!!

yep, the faint whistle is perfectly normal, the turbo has variable blades in the housing that speed up and slow down the turbo according to revs etc, I think its something to do with the engine management self-checking while its stood doing nothing.

The other noise I'm not so sure about, but it could well be the 'raspy whistle' that I heard before I sorted out the boost pipe connections. The lower boost pipe that goes into the intercooler inside the right wing sometimes starts to leak, you'll know if its this cos there will probably be a small spot of oil on the drive where its parked after you've had it a few weeks! This is oil that has been recirced back into the intake from the crankcase vent system, and again, its normal. The raspy whistle is caused by a mixture of oil and air escaping from said joint.

Welcome to Fabia vRS ownership, I had one for over 3 years until recently. The noises you describe sound perfectly like a normal turbo sound to me. On my car when you had the window open and you accelerate gently from tickover the high pitch whistle would start and the decrease, this is the turbo speeding up to provide boost, this was especially noticeable driving past a brick wall as the sound would be bounced back towards you. As for the strange shakey whistling on accelerating, I expect this occurs most noticeably when your foot is buried to the carpet accelerating through 2000 to 2500 rpm, mine also did this and gave a sound like air rushing through the pipework. The whistling sound is coming from the turbocharger because it is very slightly out of balance and nothing to worry about, I have heard of some people when having a turbo rebuilt deliberately having it set up slightly out of balance just to give the noises you describe, it is the turbo providing maximum boost as you accelerate through the maximum torque output of the engine. Only advice I would give to you is to treat the car gently until it is warmed up and when you come to stop it, especially after you've been having some fun with it, to let it tickover for a couple of minutes or drive gently to where you are going to park up to allow the heat in the turbo to dissipate. Have fun with your new car, it will bring a smile to your face when you put your foot down and leave the boy racers behind!!

That is exactly what happens, i try to let the car get to a good tempreture before i even think about putting my foot down, i hear about people pushing the car up to 4500 rev, personally i cant see why you would do that! Thankfully my work place has a 0.2 mile drive with sodding speed bumps so gives the turbo plenty of time to cool down if i have given a boy racer a spanking!!!

Your welcome James, I agree with your coment about pushing the car up to 4500 rpm, no need, the only time I took mine above 2500 to 3000 rpm was just after I filled the fuel tank when the car was at it's heaviest, nicely warmed up on a clear road and put my foot into the carpet and kept it there until the car stopped accelerating, then changed gear up to 3rd and did the same again, you will see the black smoke come from the exhaust as the soot is blown out and the car will seem much more lively as it is allowed to breathe easier.
