Parking Sensor Problem

Featured Replies

My 06 reg Octavia has parking sensors front and rear. Had the car from new and never a problem with them before.

Today when I select reverse (manual box) there is no initial beep to indicate the parking system is working. The parking

display on the radio appears and then goes off and the switch on the dashboard remains flashing.

Any ideas or does this mean a trip to the dealers ?

Parking sensors in general are not the most robust of things :-( I had a front one go last year, best guess someone bumped into the front of the car in a car park. No visible signs of contact though.

To test it's ideally a job for hooking up the car for diagnostics, that will tell exactly which sensor the car thinks is wrong.

I'm not sure if this works on VAG cars -- but on BMW you can turn the key to position 2 (engine off, but car otherwise on) and select reverse gear (although it is an automatic). This sounded an alarm from PDC to say it was offline (rather than the normal beep beep beep). Then it's a case of getting out and going round the car at all 8 sensors and put your ear up close. The sensors "tick tick tick" when they're working.

If you've got body coloured bumpers they need painting when you're replacing them too.

I had a go at the failed one with some switch cleaner on the contacts at the back of it with the bumper off, but no joy. Replacement sensor was the only option i could find.

Hope this helps

Ideally you need someone to plug a Vag-com or VCDS unit into you car to scan it for fault codes. I also have front and rear parking

sensors and they seem to have a mind of their own just now... The dealer charge for just running a diagnostic scan can vary dramatically.

I've scanned mine to see what codes are thrown up and it says there is a communication issue with one of the sensors (Rear mid left).

My symptoms vary depending on how the car is feeling, but have had the no beep, no display and the sensor button flashing. I also get a

random beep, similar to what you get when selecting reverse initially, so not 100% sure the sensor is at fault as it could be the parking

sensor ECU. Rear sensors are awkward to get access to, so more than likely means a bumper off job.

I know you said you've had no problems, but out of interest, has your rear screen wash always been ok ? If not, there is a junction on

the rear water pipe close to where the parking sensor ECU is located.. I have read that water ingress from the rear wash pipe can damage the ECU.

I'm waiting for the warmer weather to come in before investigating mine further.

Sometimes 1 of my rear sensors thinks something is behind which can be annoying, only happens occasionally though, have checked it made sure there's no dirt on it or anything so must be faulty, anyone else has this problem?

Did the rear wiper washer pop off, control module sits under it and can result in new module needed if water gets at it.

Any ideas on what sort of codes a knackered control module will flag up ? Multiple sensor faults ?

My sensors seemed to work okay (except one) yesterday, not back to having a mind of their own today.

I don't really know, it was a mates car, which had been destroyed with water....and the garage changed the unit.

I do think they were very erratic (sthe sensors that is ;) )
