FUEL COMPUTER DISPLAY PROBLEM

Featured Replies

i know this has been posted b4 but i cant seem to find the answer ,whats wrong is my current mpg display is totally erratic ,its showing 5mpg to 92mpg it never settles down ,and has no relevance to my driving ,does anyone know a fix ,how does the pc gather the info is there a sensor somwhere i can check ,im at a loss at the mo ,as i dont have a decent workshop manual ,can anybody help, cheers

Erm i think you have the Maxidot showing instant fuel consumption

Cycle through the views and one of them will have a symbol that looks like a 0 with a / through it. That is you average consumption

See to left of the fuel consumption on my car. That is the screen you want for your average. If that symbol isn't there you are on instant consumption which will vary constantly as you describe.

the instantaneous figure will always vary wildly as you describe. to get a more steady figure you need to select the average mpg display.

sorry carl i havnt got a maxidot its the more basic one

vary ,tonight i was driving down the flat motorway at a constant 60 ,and it was displaying 5mpg to 92 mpg and kept changing every second ,also if i put my foot down fuel consumption got better if i took my foot of the gas it got worse, are u sure this is what its supposed to do,

Im not sure if the Normal LCD Display has a constant one (i had a Mk1 Octavia 2.0 GLXi that did)

Just ensure you are not on the instant MPG and are on the Average. IIRC the symbol next to it is the same.

Otherwise if you have access to VCDS then get someone to check for faults. If not then take it to a dealer and ask to see if they will check it for you sometimes they will be nice and check it without charging.

The current display always varies wildy. Mine does it. Will display anything from 4mpg - 125mpg and anything in between. Don't forget the car is constantly changing what it is doing. ECU is constantly checking and adapting to keep the car running properly.

For example you may think that the road is flat and your trying to drive at a constant speed. However due to changes in the road height, Surface, Temperature etc keeping the car at, for example, 60mph requires the engine to constantly work at different rates.

What you describe is nothing to worry about.

You get instantaneous and constant readings even with the non-maxidot dash.

You normally find that if you take your foot off the gas completely the readout will show a straight line, and will only start to show something when you apply pressure to the accelerator.

Your a bit late now Bryan
