16 valve TDI's compared to 8 valve TDI's

Featured Replies

What difference in power delivery and driveability is there between a VW 8 valve TDI and a VW 16 valve TDI?

Does the 8 valve engine have a narrower power band and more abrupt power delivery?

Thanks

Different engine size too. 16v is a 2 litre engine.

I wouldn't say the powerbands are any different. 16v might have a little more at the top-end than an 8v - I know when tuned they can hit 6,000rpm ok.... :giggle:

I would stick with an 8 valve, too many issues with the 16v for me....

Would you mind expanding on that, please? (I'm just curious :))

Cracked heads and oil pump issues for a start.......

Thanks - I like to try to be aware of common issues to various things (may never need it, but it helps :)) - hadn't actively looked for any issues with it, or heard of them around here, but it's always nice to know. :)

That must sound horrific :(

I like the sound of my 8v at highish revs...but then, I'm strange.

By high-ish, do you mean 4,000?

Erm...yeah  :p

I've got a 1.9tdi 100 elegance and it says its a 16v on the log book? Any ideas?

Why would it say 16v on the log book?

If it's a 1.9 it will be 8v.... Or it could be that experimental

engine that was knocking about in the workshop....

I would ask the DVLA for the extra 8 valves.

16v powerband is slightly different - my dad has a 2.0TDI Elegance Octavia and I have a 1.9TDI vRS Fabia.

His car tends to continue pulling well when mine starts to tail off.

I didn't think 8v / 16v was even mentioned on the V5? :dull:

That would be the voltage the alternator runs at...

Wonder how different the PD and CR 2.0 16v's feel?

They're very different. I love my PD, especially mapped and de-dpf'd, but standard PD170 vs standard CR170 - CR wins. It's smoother and goes better higher up the rev range.

TDI 1.4 says,'Anything more than 6 valves is just showing off'

I used to have (well the missus had) a Mk5 Golf GT TDi and I had a Fab vRS

The Golf felt much more refined in the way it delivered the power, whereas the fabia just gave you a lump of it and away you go.

The golf was probably just as quick, but the fabia felt quicker due to all the bottom end power...

Someone I know has an Audi A4 Estate 2.0TDI (CR 170) with the DSG box. It's quieter than my Fabia 1.9TDI (PD100), and it is scarily fast (I got a lift off them once, going around the back-roads at some silly speed - real throw-you-back-in-your-seat acceleration...).

Basically on the 3rd line it says:- Make- SKODA, then the next line:- Model/Type- FABIA ELEGANCE 16V. Then all the other stuff....... :smirk:

Does it mention what fuel it uses on the logbook?
