usb socket in switch blank ( now with pics )

Featured Replies

Being the eternal bodger...

In a moment of boredom I pulled a universal usb cigar lighter charger apart and after having a look at it

decided to go and remove a switch blank and attempt to cut a small rectangle hole in it.

This done... (after almost losing a finger in the process...) Which was a fiddly pain in the a$$ by the way...

I managed to cut the reverse of the blank where needed to support the body of the charger.

It's not the tidiest job I've ever done but wiring it up to a battery it seems to work okay and charges my sat nav....

Now then, I was considering scotch locking it into the power for the rear screen demister as I think its ignition switched

and just earthing to body under the centre console... I can't leave it on a permanent live as it has an led which illuminates the socket.

Alternatively I thought I might nick a feed from the cigar lighter circuit and put a small switch in-line to disable the usb led when not in use.

Do these ideas sound feasible? I am no tech so keep any advice in plain english please :)

Thanks... Garry.

I wish I sold fire extinguishers for a living

Using the feed for the heated rear window will be fine. Personally I would splice the wire, solder and tape, as I HATE those scotch lock connectors.

How about taking from the live switched stereo feed? On many aftermarket stereos there's even a spare bullet connector to let you tap into it. You can earth to any part of the metal body of the car.

This sounds like a good idea, the cig lighter was obviously placed in the design before the advent of sat nav.

Here's another poster's efforts that I saw posted recently http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/151571-getting-to-the-fuse-box/page__view__findpost__p__1902526

When I wired in my phone charger I used the switched live from the stereo, works great and is easily accessible to go to the switch blanks.

  • 3 years later...

Hi,

I know this is over 3 years old now.

I've got everything set to go for something like this but i'm not too sure how to go about cutting the hole for the USB. I bought a Dremel rotary at the weekend and have a few cutting options in there but nothing really seems to quite fit with what i want to do.

Can you remember how you cut your square/rectangle at all please??
