EVO magazine drive the 1.8TSi Yeti.

Featured Replies

Just come home to find my copy of Evo on the door mat. This is the third time they have mentioned the Yeti and this month they drive the 1.8 160bhp TSi.

To summarise they say "It turned up at the office and we were prepared to make fun of it. The name, the fog lamps, the SUV styling. And then we drove it and came back converted".

"Its genuinely enjoyable to drive" "it carries speed through corners, has a neutral handling balance, a remarkably stiff frame and deeply impressive damping - this is the family car that feels expensively engineered. It even flies well***"

"You barrel along roads with a smile on your face, gaining real satisfaction from chasing down that GTI while nailing the perfect line through that tricky late apex roundabout".

"If theres a better affordable family car out there, we've yet to drive it".

And that from Evo magazine, probably the most respected UK car mag; at least in my circle of friends. :p

*** in the article photo its actually flying over a jump, all four wheels off the ground :o

Now that does sound encouraging :)

Brilliant, I was just about to write a very similar post!

None of my mates would believe me just how good the Yeti is to drive - the Wife has already suggested taking it for a lap of the Nordschleife. B)

Haha I was too , just got my EVO today.... VERY positive review of the car , good stuff.

Thanks for the tip off......time to track down a copy!

It seems to me that the Yeti is proving to be a real driver's car - a fairly unique accolade in its class. Judging by this recent post on youtube, it certainly seems like it's good fun to drive in the snow ("snow monster" being a very apt name).

There's too many good reviews - i enjoyed this at first.

But now it's getting too much. There will be too many Yeti's. I want them to be rare beasts. I like the fact ignorrant ppl who pay £1000's more for a BMW X1, Tiguan, Kuga, CRV, Q5 etc - in my eyes X1 owners are the worst of these breed. So desperate to keep up their status and feelings of inadequecy they pay well over the odd for a totally useless car just because of the badge.

So please no more decent reviews of Yeti's.

Rant over! :wonder:

They've not said anything I didn't know already, He.He ;)

Good point, well put

So, is it time to start slagging off Yeti's

Or just let people enjoy them :)

Coolio - saw it had arrived yesterday but not started on it yet :)

Likewise last thing I was expecting to see in Evo was a Yeti. It was one of three vehicles in a "Finding the thrill of driving in unlikely vehicles" article. The other two were a Ford Transit TDCI van, and a Land Rover Defender.

They were very complimentary about the handling.

Been on a lot of A roads and Motorways in my 1.2 this week (10 plate).

Took it home on the country lanes today and opened it up a bit - good grief it can handle !

With the long-travel suspension it took everything you could throw at it - very impressive indeed.

That is good to hear. How is the MPG doing?

Gentle tootle into work - 42

Back road blast - 35.

MPG drops significantly at motorway speeds - if anyone regularly does this, get a diesel !

That sounds OK to me. I don't do so much motorway and am hoping to break the 40mpg as an average.

I think this is something which effects TSIs in general but especially the Yeti with it's large frontal area and brick shaped aerodynaics.

Interesting to hear your comments re: the handling of the 2wd. Evo seem impressed by their 4wd 1.8TSI, but I was wondering how much of that is attributed to the extra grip of the 4 wheel drive and how much is the chassis itself.

If I am that impressed with the 1.2, the 1.8 must be a stormer - hence the great reviews ! Honest John thought the same.

If money were no object, I'd go for the 1.8, but it's a second car for me to urban commute in, so a 1.2 Elegance is perfect. Interestingly, although I do 8 miles into work at mainly 30mph, by the time I get there the oil tamp isn't yet on 90. No wonder they discourage a DPF diesel from short urban commutes.

So another eulogy from Evo; what better accolade can there be? This is really most encouraging.

Thanks for this.

Two interesting features IMHO; there is quite a remarkable lack of roll, although the tyres are clearly working hard (I had read somewhere a couple of months ago that the ARBs, rear in particular, were quite fat) and the airbox on the TSI engine would appear to be the same as the TDI engine.
