Diesel engine 1.9TDI - URGENT advice please!

Featured Replies

I ran an Octy II 1.9TDI for 115k over 4 years and was extremely pleased, so much so, that I have replaced it with a Superb II with the same engine. After 3,000 miles I had the engine remapped and this instantly transformed the driving experience.

Driven carefully, I regularly achieve 53-55mpg based on actual fill-ups, rather than the MFD readout (60+mpg average per computer).

What's more, remapping is easier with no DPF to be concerned with.

The Superb has now done 41k miles in 15 months and is a great long distance cruiser (700+ mile range).

Just wondering Velopus - would you not be worried about the remap being wiped by Skoda as soon as the plug in their comp for ECU updates?

I'd love to do this when I get my own Octy but am worried the money'll go down the drain as soon as it's serviced!

Hi the 1.9 tdi engine IMHO is one of the stronger diesels produced yes it is a little noisy but look on this forum to see the huge mileages achieved with this unit, mine has just cracked 103,000 miles averages an indicated mpg and where possible can exceed 110 in Germany of course. this isn't a racing car but swmbo says that the ocy feels much faster than the 2.2 140bhp Honda we also have. This is a good choice,it is a proven unit and you can't go wrong, elegance trim too so you will be in a good place.

I've had two 1.9 TDI engines, first the 90bhp version in an Octavia GLX and the 150bhp version in the Seat Toledo Sport TDI 150. While it did have a bit of a clatter I really only noticed it when I had the window down and was idling but I can't say it ever really bothered me plus the power delivery on the 150bhp felt a bit crude compared to the 2.0 litre engines but I actually liked uncivilized surge of power on the 1.9 engine. I am concerned about the DPF on the 2 litre engines, I never had any problems with either of my 1.9 engines. If the vrs had come with a powerful version of the 1.9 engine I wouldn't have hesitated to go with it, in fact it would have been more appealing.

Can't compare the 1.9PD to other VW engines, but by way of comparison I sometimes borrow SWMBO's BMW 120d. The BM unit is quieter and foot to the floor appreciably quicker, but in the reality of day to day driving I find my 1.9PD provides more shove than I normally want anyway. OK it rattles a little more than the BM, but there's no hiding the BM's a diesel either as soon as you switch it on.

Proof of the pudding for me at least is that if both keys are hanging on the rack I usually prefer to take the Skoda - not that I'm trying to say it's better than the BM, SWMBO prefers her BM - just that the Skoda more suits how I use it.

Have to smile at the odd "agricultural" reference to the 1.9PD - maybe suggesting something akin to a tractor - well for me that may be apt, I find it's an excellent tug for my 1400k caravan.

There was talk earlier of a whining engine without a turbo, or supercharger, or whatever.

I've got an Octy 2 with a 2ltr deisel and it's fitted with a dual mass flywheel (DMF)

That, apparently is where the whine I'm getting is coming from, getting it fixed is going to cost of about a grand.

Apart from that, the engine is not to be faulted, I've had no other probs with it at all, Well Recommended. (Just get one that has a good DMF)

currently driving 1.9 tdi dsg and have been doing so for two and a half years of trouble free driving

My Superb has been main dealer serviced four time since being remapped and the garage has never commented on the remap. Indeed, the garage are also a Superchips dealer, although, my own remap was performed by Performance Torque.

I'd not hesitate to recommend remapping the 1.9Tdi, especially as there is no DPF on non-Greenline versions.

In addition, my recorded economy for the past 25,000 miles has been a very wallet friendly 56.26 mpg:-

I should also add that the remap was done at 3,000 miles and the car has now covered 83,500 miles and performs faultlessly.
