vRS already remapped. Thinking about a decat

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I need a wee bit of advice,

I recently had my vrs remapped by Angel Tuning, must say its quite fun now (180bhp +300ftlbs torque). My mate recently had a decat put on hos mondeo st tdci (looks and sounds amazing and got me thinking). I was wondering, with me already having the remap would the addition of a decat be worth it (in terms of sound, performance etc) and would it be dangerous to the engine (think i read the turbo takes the strain).

I remember reading that your best to have the decat first, then get a custom remap. But any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Callum

there is some sound evidence to show that re map + de cat leads to turbo failure due to the de cat pipe allowing the turbo to overboost, there are some with de cats and re maps that say theirs is ok,but from what i've seen, and people i've spoken too i wouldn't go down that route with a kkk turbo

Definite risk of Turbo damage due to the variable vane technology of the Turbo.

Just get a cat-back non-resonated exhaust from Miltek... job done! :)

Had one on my old Ibiza FR TDI and it sounded good, nice deep bassy tone.

About £300 fitted

2003/03 Fabia vRS 131k on the clock - original standard turbo & clutch.

Running 175bhp/290lb/ft for +/-100k and decatted for the last 40k

It's upto you at the end of the day :smirk:

wen mine was decatted with a full blue flame you cudnt really tell tbh...

and imo if you drive it properly ie in the power band before giving it welly you wont have problems..

Turbos hate back pressure and the cat creates the biggest amount of it

I have mines de catted and haven't looked back since! Turbo spools up so much quicker and you can feel the difference. Believe me when I say my car has far from an easy life. It gets death everyday from first start to last turn off and it's been fine

If you're remap is any good it will adapt to the de cat and stop the turbo overboosting. And I know from a couple mates angel tuning maps are good

A remap wouldn't change because a different part is fitted, hence why you put parts on then map the car. I have a scorpion cat back, £250ish fitted, sounds great! Couple of mates have run with no cat and no issues tho so should be ok

Most generic maps can adapt to certain mods. I've already asked the guy who mapped my vrs umpteen questions about what needs the map tweaked and if it's say a bigger turbo then yeh new map but a de cat the map will adjust to as it's constantly learning

He knows the pd engine inside and out as he built and ran a 270bhp polo gt tdi which has the pd130 engine in it and is a vw master tech

Thanks for the info

I think I'll give it a miss for the moment. But that is purely because road tax/mot is just round the corner.

I'll give the guy at angel tuning a wee call tomorrow, see what he recommends as well given the map ive had.

Cant say no to more performance tho…..

Cheers

A diesel doesn't require a cat for the mot mate so you can de cat it and keep it that way all you want

So if this is the case, why has it always been the rule of mods THEN map to accmodate the new mods? Basicly your saying the car remaps its self?! Anyone who actually does this for a living (site sponsor maybe?) advise me on how this works?

Matt :)

You are right, they can accomodate very small changes in fueling (pd160 intake etc), but a de cat on top of a map will cause overspool generally

My de cat has been fine, guy who mapped my car has said the map doesn't need touched. Covered sveral thousand miles now with a heavy foot

I know you're an expert so not arguing over it but my car was mapped then 4 weeks later was de catted

Theirs a definate noticeable difference in the car and as I also said my car gets death everyday. I don't even heat the car up before booting it, never have done with any of my 8 cars and all are still running. Only problems I've had with my fabia have been a coolant leak which sprayed all over my maf knackering that and my starter motor went

No links to his polo as he's not an Internet person. He now has a mk6 golf gti running 320bhp with more to come. He's using it as his demo for the company

Always amazes me how some people refute good information given by people who tune cars for a living. Seems we have a magical VRS that won't break, even when booted every day from cold. The words idiot and liar spring to mind. Some people, Jesus.

I did say i'm not arguing the point whether or not it is or is not true. I'm just saying how my cars running after being de catted after being mapped. In no way shape or form did i refute any good information!

Yeh whatever. You are saying though, it is OK to boot a car from cold, and that is just BAD INFORMATION to post on a car forum. Wake up and smell what your shoveling.

Not shovelling anything! But i'm not on here to argue, judge me all you want. I'm not saying it's ok to give a car death from cold i just said i've always done it

And the clutch thats "getting worse by the day" (prob down to your driving style by the sounds of it!

I`m not saying im any kinda of expert, but i know some basics, and self mapping cars isnt one of them lol.

if your really that worried about damage to your turbo then why dont you fit a dump valve. but be warned that the diesel dump valves are expensive due to them being electronic.

Remind me never to buy a car from you ! :D:giggle:

I always say i never reccomend buying a car after i'm finished with it. But everyone of my old cars all 7 of them are still on the road in full working order so it shows that ragging a car constantly doesn't always kill it unless it's a Fiat which went through 3 gearboxes a clutch driveshaft seals etc in the year and 20k i owned and done in it haha
