SBS 2008 + BES Express + WHS = Something that will or won't work?

Featured Replies

I already have a Windows Home Server performing backup duties for a couple of PC's and Laptops, it also houses all of my media.

Since RIM have released the free Blackberry Enterprise Server Express i've wanted a go at setting one up. I have a (legit) copy of Windows SBS 2008 Standard which I believe BES works with but i'm not sure if I could utilise it for my other PC's?

I have a mixture of Vista Business, XP Home, XP MCE, W7HP clients and was wondering if I would be able to use the exchange part of SBS to serve email to these clients as well as keeping the WHS up and running for backups.

Any obvious show stoppers that you IT fellas can spot?

Yes you can do that, no problem. You just need to make sure you have a version of outlook on each of your clients and they must also be joined to the domain created by SBS. I have a simillar setup here, except I am running Win2003 with exchange in a VM running on the WHS server itself. MS Virtual server 2005 SP2 installs and runs perfectly on WHS.

Thanks for the reply, didn't think about using VMs.

Project is on hold as SBS 2008 needs 4GB or RAM :(, might buy a bottom end Dell server and do it with Virtual Machines.

Would SBS with WHS as a virtual machine be the way to go or the other way around?
