Bolero stereo doesn't work with iPod Classic

Featured Replies

I've just bought a new Octavia with the Bolero Stereo and the MDI interface in the glove box. I also have a 4th generation iPod Classic 40GB.

When I plug it in I see that the device has been recognised as the MEDIA section shows it as a connected device (along with it's name "graham" - don't ask).

However it gives me an error message indicating that it cannot read any of the media files or folders. All music files on the iPod are MP3 and AAC (no DRM).

Does anyone know why this is? The manual is depressingly vague on such matters.

Thanks

Jon

Is your Classic a Firewire or a USB iPod?

I have a Firewire 40gb (circa 2004) and it will not work with the MDI. The MDI only works with USB devices.

The work around is to use a 3.5mm male to male stereo cable and plug it from the iPod headphone socket to the Aux socket in the centre console of the car. You still get full iPod contro (from the actual iPod) all you miss is the song info on the display of the Bolero and the charging. The MDI will charge the Firewire models.

Edit.

Just checked Apples site and according to them your 40GB Classic appears to be the same as my 40GB so I would assume it's a Firewire model and won't work with the MDI.

Thanks for the reply and for going to the trouble of checking this out. Mine came with both a firewire and a USB connector but you could be right that it's essentially a firewire device.

Tad annoying when I've just parted with ~£170 extra to get iPod connectivity with the stereo :( I don't think my car has an AUX socket either. I'm going to have to take this up with the Skoda dealer I think...

I have a 60 GB 4th Gen iPod Photo which works fine with the MDI interface on my Bolero.

Has it been connected to iTunes recently? Is it on the latest version of firmware?

Has it been connected to iTunes recently? Is it on the latest version of firmware?

Firmware version 3.1.1

Model: M9268FE

FAT32 filesystem

Do you think that upgrading the firmware would solve the problem?

From memory that sounds about the most recent firmware for the Classic's. Apple no longer update them as far as they are concerned the Classics are obsolete.

Updating the firmware won't help it's a physical interface issue the MDI is looking for a USB device and we have Firewire devices. Round object, square hole unfortunately although in this case the plug fits it's just that the wires in the plug don't connect correctly.

The only way I can see these iPods working through the MDI is to get the cable that has the 3.5mm AV plug on the end and plug that into the iPods speaker socket (same as using the Aux socket). You will get songs you will not get titles or info on the screen of the Bolero, your iPod will not charge and you will have to reach into the golve box to control the device.

To me the easier option was to buy a 16Gb SDHC card.

Mine works fine - there's an AUX socket in the jumbo box between the seats in my vRS, but IU'm afraid I don;t know where itis if you don;t have a jumbo box.

Your Bolero should have an SD card slot - I find this much more convenient than plugging in the iPod all the time, although admittedly you can't shuffle songs.

although admittedly you can't shuffle songs.

Yes you can just choose Mix. It will then randomly play all the songs in whatever directory it is currently playing from then randomly form other directories.

I think I know where you maybe going wrong.

Are you using the USB adapter in the MDI and then plugging your IPOD usb cable into that?. This solution does not work, as that will simply add you ipod as a USB mass storage device and not an ipod. This means that any music stored on the IPOD is not accessible at all, but you can see the HDD (device name).

You need to get the specific ipod connection cable, this connects the ipod directly to the mdi without any other cables and will allow the MDI to see all the tracks etc. just as you would on the ipod. The cable you should be using is this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-MDI-IPOD-LEAD-SCIROCCO-GOLF-MMI-RCD510-RNS510_W0QQitemZ170447656003QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item27af78d443

Thanks K1W1 - yeah I think your explanation makes perfect sense. I might just get an SD card as you suggest.

Thanks but I am using the correct MDI iPod connector cable...

Doesn't work.

That cable is designed for USB iPods not the older ones pre Mark IV (2004) which connected via Firewire.

I have just tried my daughters original iPod Mini and another MkIII 20GB iPod neither of them work and they are both Firewire models. I've also tried two USB Nanos, a USB 120GB Classic and iPhones (also USB) that we have here and they all work perfectly.
