Power Steering

Featured Replies

Here we go Y plated Fabia sdi, got a call from missus saying her powering stearing is very heavy and theres a pretty picture on the dash :dull:

told her to turn off ignition and then restart engine and she how she got on got a call when she got back to work and it had come on again when she was in carpark.

Called out RAC (free with bank account so let him get cold outside)

He looked at battery alternator and said all was fine and it was probably a glitch, im not convinced but hey hey he might be right.

Things that I have picked up from her when it happened to her she was going slow and debateing on which HGV space was big enough for her car in :giggle: .

Im thinking battery but the expert says no so what does everyone else think.

cheers peeps.

The PAS is electrically driven, so maybe battery. I did hear someone on here say that if you turn the steering wheel whilst the headlights are on, if they dim, then the battery is on it's way out ...?

time for an update things have been fine till beginning of week.

the light came on and has stayed on untill today. steering is a little heavier but you can hear power steering working but its heavy at slow speeds.

Light went off today for over 30 miles and then it came on again again same as before you can hear the power steering on full lock.

The PAS angle sensor attaches to the base of the steering column. All done from underneath.

It is part 18 in your first pic above and kind of has a semi-circular notch in it which sits around the steering column. The wiring for it stretches over to the power steering pump which sits kind of inside/below the nearside front wheel arch. :)

Price of part?

well got part priced up today £114.02 for sensor thought I would phone up service department for diog and fitting £86.00 for diognostic's which is hours labour woman on reception said it would take 30 minutes as diognostics wouldnt read all the necessay area's so it would be visual if then it was agreed it was Steering wheel angle sensor then they would fit part after they orderd it but if fitting took over 30 minutes then I would be charged for another hours labour.

What a load of cods wallop so though sod it located a secondhand one, 90 warrenty for £32.00 posted.

Hopfully part will arrive wednesday as I have the day off and I will be crawling under the car.

£114 new is a bit excessive! I would want supplied & fitted for that!

Mine has been done and although a bit fiddly, was not too hard to do from underneath the car, with it on a lift.

Dont forget there are various types depending on year of car. My car is 'W' year 2000, and the sensor is permanently connected to the lead, with a plug on the end. Newer cars have a sensor with a socket on it ,and a lead with a plug on either end.
