Part worn tyres - would you?

Featured Replies

Have you ever been driving down the motorway, and seen what looks like the entire tread of a truck tyre lying at the roadside? That's what happens when a tyre delaminates as a result of invisible damage and/or underinflation. Now, is trying to get a car with 3 tyres across 3 lanes of traffic and stopped from 70mph really worth having an extra 50p a week in your pocket? How about repairing the damaged wheel arch from the flailing carcase?

Are you trying to say used tyres are more prone to blowouts? Based on what? Pure guesswork?

Of course tyres fail due to inflation problems, hardly due to how many owners it's had.

Everyone has witnessed something similar to the scenario you describe I would imagine. Blowouts can (and do) happens to all sorts of vehicles in all sorts of conditions. If you've any factual eveidence to show second hand tyres suffer most then it'd be good to read up on it.

Going by this logic, you'd have to replace all the tyres when you bought a secondhand car, Would you honestly do that?

Interesting reading, but raises a few points. Is a survey comissioned by a tyre company (who want more sales) really going to be totally impartial? The cynic in me tends to think not.

The point about TS finding dodgy tyres after an inspection is very valid. As mentioned above though - if you inspect a tyre before a potential purchase you'd find the defects like the TS people did! Also, at the same time, if you conducted a stop and inspect on some random 3+year old cars on the public road I bet you'd find plenty of defects as well.

Part of one article mentions people who buy tyres with less than 2mm of tread! That's ridiculous and something no-one I know would entertain.

I guess we'll agree to dis-agree over this, Won't stop me buying tyre's I have looked at and am happy with the condition of though

Can you tell me where I said that? No, because i didn't say that! What I said (several times now) is that you can't assess the condition of the vehicle that the tyres aren't on any more.

Where did I say that it was? What I said (correctly) was that the failure is not always immediate, in that it can occur after the tyre has been re-inflated to the correct temperature. In which context you may like to note that I have replaced tyres that had sustained slow punctures that I'd not diagnosed quickly.

Do you have any factual evidence to prove the contrary? I thought not.

See my responses above (qv this post). I have replaced tyres on buying a second-hand car (well, more accurately I've had the dealer replace them as a condition of sale).

Oh so now your telling me it's because of pothole damage. So as soon as all buy a new car, or hit a pothole u buy new tyres?! Yeah right!

Matt

When you buy a new car, what if the delivery drive has abused it? New tyres then too?

What if......?

Sorry, don't mean to offend Mr Monkhai, but it's been a long day with a few meetings. We have a running joke at work that when we have a meeting, there will always be a 'What if?' question at some point. There were a few today and they can never really be answered because of their nature.

This thread is a 'What if' all of it's own which could run for ever, as there'll never be a definitive answer or general agreement. Some will buy them, some won't.

Edit : Poor spelling. As I said, long day. :(

No offence taken, my comment was tongue in cheek anyway.

As for the long day, yes they can cause so many issues with me too :)
