ah - deleted this bit!

Hi Terfyn

Apologies if I gave the impression of rubbishing your suggestion - that certainly wasn't the idea. I am grateful to all for contributing to this thread as it is a genuine attempt to head off a problem when i take delivery of my new car.

The reason it won't work for me is that I have no private drive or space on which to keep the car. In this very odd little hamlet of only 5 houses the public road comes right up to my front door! It is a cul-de-sac, and more like a large turning space or communal area, but because it isn't mine I'd be unable to erect any shelter. If you Google Maps Merthyr Cynog you will find that Google Streets is enabled, and it will let you understand the layout. Mine is the middle stone cottage between the yellow one and the one being restored. Also - the only access to my little garden is through the house, so anything round there is impossible too.

So - far from poo-poohing your gazebo (!!!) it is the practicalities that scupper it.

I see what you mean!! My apologies. Merthyr Cynog looks like the ideal village surrounding the church - if a little isolated. Do you have a pub?

We are deep in the country (nearest neighbour is 200 mtrs away) but not too far from the main roads. (LL53 6SU then NE past two farms to where the road has a sharp 90 deg bend at a Tee junction) So plenty of parking space.

The cottage I'm in was, within living memory, one of many pubs in this area, all completely rural and isolated. The graveyard of the church makes interesting reading, showing the number of infants who died over the years. The gravestones go back centuries.

In order to get mobile reception I have an 8 mile drive either to Builth or Brecon, and before I had broadband installed the pnly way email got to me were if I drove 6 miles and sat on a mate's wall, and tapped into his wifi. What we compromise over in order to experience true rural existence. If you look at the google streets of the village you can see the locals taking the sheep for a walk down the road, and the traffic jam it caused!!

What you don't see, getting back on topic (BG) are the ruddy starlings.

How about adding a power washer to your arsenal? Not only would it remove any fresh bird poo without scratching, but you could attack the starlings with it, like a slightly-rubbish version of riot police...
