Harmony One Advice

Featured Replies

Hey up all,

Just got a Harmony One for my birthday today after what seems like ages thinking about whether to get one or not and wondered if there was any advice or tips i should have before setting about getting it working with all our kit???

Any advice welcome.

Cheers

Dave.

I have A Logitech remote, and love it.

Its a great device for simple stuff. Setting up should be quick and easy (assuming all your kit is reasonably new).

I would say be prepared for a couple of hours fiddling, i got all the devices done fairly quickly, but fiddling with everything to get it just right took a while (as the software is fairly rubbish)

I just got a 555 as they are a bargain on Amazon right now (£40).

Agree with the above - prepare for a couple of hours fiddling - aside from that they are straight forward.

I paid £69 for my Harmony One on Play.com.

It is very simple to setup and use, but not as flexible as my old Phillips Pronto. Half the size mind.

Cheers guys....

The oldest device this'll be used with is the AV amp (Yamaha RX-V657 which is about 4 or 5 years old). The rest of the kit is all within 2 years old so hopefully will be ok.

One thing i might have a problem with is the fact we have lost the remote for the plasma, (Panny PZ80), Don't ask where it's gone but the two favourites at the moment are that it's been dropped in an xmas decorations box and is now in the loft or it got mixed in with the xmas wrapping rubbish and got thrown out. So are the settings etc... you download to the device pretty comprehensive or do you need to use the existing remote to teach the Harmony the remainder of the functions the existing remote has? If this is the case i have a back-up of my folks having the same Panny remote as they also have a Panny plasma so i can always head over there to program any other buttons up etc...

Cheers

Dave.

Good choice - I've had my One for a few months now having previously had a Sony Remote commander, and I love it :)

Shouldn't worry to much about your missing remote - the online database is pretty comprehensive and I'd be amazed if they didn't have your panel. I have a Panasonic and I don't remember needing to add anything extra from the remote.

My only gripe with it, and it's almost pathetically small, is that the clock doesn't advance unless a button has been pressed e.g. if you press a button at 8.30, then glace at the clock 30 mins later (having wiggled it to get the light on..!) it will still read 8.30 - press a button and it will magically jump to 9.00.

Got it all setup today.....

Had a few issues which i managed to sort eventually.....

Harmony was changing the Amp to zone 2 when switching to watch SkyHD which just needed me to learn the correct input button on the amp remote into the Harmony to replace the default one it had....

When using it for the SkyHD i was getting two or three button presses each time i pressed a direction arrow to navigate around the TV guide which just needed the button sensitivity setting adjusting within the options for the SkyHD activity....

Had to play about with the XBOX360 and Wii activities as they use the component input on the Plasma and Panny plasmas can't use the discrete codes to switch to the component input. I set those two activities to select HDMI1 then select the AV button, move the selected input up one to the component input, and select. Adds an extra couple of seconds to the activity but at least it's still automated etc....

Have had a play about with the virtual buttons too on the SkyHD activity so the coloured buttons are in the four corners with nothing in the middle two positions to space them out a bit and stop the wrong colour being pressed / caught. I added a virtual button that runs through the keystrokes to bring up ITV HD, and also added my SkyHD PIN to the 'E' button for when a movie requires it during the daytime etc....

Now to teach the mrs how to use it.

Cheers

Dave.

Timmyboy...... My Harmony One works fine with regard the time. The time is always correct when ever it is picked up. Just tried it after leaving it on the sofa for 5 mins and as soon as i picked it up and it lit up the time was still correct.

Maybe a firmware issue or could be a faulty unit???

***EDIT***

Just found a post on the Logitech forums from last year stating it was a known issue and it was due to be sorted via firmware update.... Maybe try checking/updating the firmware on your remote via the Harmony Remote software under the downloads tab.

Cheers

Dave.

Cheers Dave for the heads up - I've just updated the firmware and a quick test shows it to be sorted...!

Good stuff. Great remote :)
