3MM of thread left on front

Featured Replies

Checked my tyres this afternoon and discovered have 5mm worth of thread on both rears, but the front is 3mm at the sides(the middle part is 4.5mm)

Is it worth me putting new ones on now or will 3mm last a good few months yet? or is how long is a piece of string type question?

I wont swap rear to front as that would still leave me with low depth ones on the rear

front tyres have done about 20k so i suppose they have done quite well.

I think you must have been running your front tyres underinflated if the outer tread depth is lower than the centre. I would double check the tyre pressures and then keep an eye on the tread depth - you should get a bit more life out of them.

You wil get plent more out of them. A few thousand. just keep an eye on them you've got till 1.6mm

As per above you will be fine and should easily get 2k out of them yet, with the weather quickly improving you have not got the worry of extreme road conditions.

pressures are checked weekly and they are 32psi.Checked this today. Thanks will keep an eye on it. perhaps my console bushes are worn and may have caused the outer thread on the shoulder to wear more...although to be honest every car i've owned before have had the threads wear quicker on the outside.perhaps hard cornering?

Maybe I've mis-read your original post. When you said 3mm at the sides and 4.5mm at the centre I took it you meant inner and outer edges at 3mm which is why I suggested the pressure could be low. Some people on here prefer running at 34-36psi depending on the tyre.

I thought the recommended fronts were higher than 32? More like 34 front, 32 rear? May be slightly off on that... Unless you're on a smaller engine? Not sure what car you have... will vary with engine weight

I run 35 front, 34 rear... Last set seemed to wear pretty evenly

Too fast around the roundabouts ?

Ive managed to get 34000 miles out of the set on my fabia. swapped them to the rears about 4000 miles ago and they havent worn down any further yet.

Blimey - what tyres are they? Continentals?

yes you are right the fronts should be higher. the recommended unladen pressure is 33 front and 32 rear. 32 seems to do fine with me. get good economy and its fairly comfy ride.

there's a guide here

Depending on the make and model of tyre fitted you may notice that they 'go off' below 3mm - Continentals are particularly prone to this as the German tyre limit is 3mm.

I would certainly keep a close eye on them and look to change them around 2mm. The performance and effectiveness of the tyre will reduce considerably between your current level and the legal minimum limit of 1.6mm, so I wouldn't advice waiting until that point before changing.
