Best insurance for modded 1.8T?

Featured Replies

It's that time of year again when I have to go through the, frankly, soul-destroying process of ringing around for quotes and this year I thought I'd give the other Briskoda insurance partners a go. I wish I hadn't bothered…

After waiting for 20 minutes on the phone to Sky Insurance, the lovely lady (and she was lovely, that's not sarcasm  ) came back and told me they couldn't get a quote anywhere near the one I've been given from Adrian Flux. Oh well, on to the next one…

Chris Knott only took 5 minutes to say they couldn't (wouldn't?) even get a quote for a car parked on the road with my mods, which are pretty minimal really. Which underwriter do they use? Highway.

"That's strange," I said, "I've been insured with Highway with these mods and at this address for the last year, and I've just been given another competitive quote by them through Adrian Flux for next year?"

"Sorry, they won't touch your car," she said. :o

So what's that all about then? Does anyone have any other suggestions for mod-friendly insurers?

Thanks

Anyone? I've had a search around the site and there doesn't seem to be too much there.

Thanks

Brentacre. I'm with them for the 2nd year running.

Try Noel Dazely too?

Good luck - it is indeed an utterly soul-destroying time of the year :dull:

Cheers Steve. I'll give them a shout.

I'm seriously doubting anyone can match Adrian Flux though, even if they have put the premium up by £50 despite an extra year's no claim bonus :'(

I had a similar story when I came to renew, I was with A-Plan last year who put me with Equity Red Star but on a no mods allowed policy. The renewal price was going to be about £950 so I shopped around last month and went to Adrian Flux who put me on a modified policy with (surprise surprise) Equity Red Star, and this came out as only £650!!! So I went back to A-Plan and asked them if they could put me on the same plan with ERS for the same price? "Sorry sir, we can't match that price" ...So they've lost my business!

Its obvious with brokers that some are are eager to take more of a backhander from the insurers than others

Try Brentacre as Wardy said, problem is if you have got your full NCD now (5/7 years with most insurers I think?) the premium is only ever going to go up with the rising cost of insurance. The only ways I can think of making it go down are either redeclaring the value of your car as being much lower, redeclaring your mileage as being much lower, getting an advanced driving qualification, or moving postcodes.

Ah yeah, forgot about A-Plan. They're worth a try too (even with the experience listed above!)

Brentacre beat CK & AF for me, so it's worth a go :)

Cheers fellas.

I phoned Brentacre and they came back with £489 but £350 excess. However, they don't charge mid-term admin or modification fees as long as the car stays below 210BHP.

Noel Dazely couldn't get anywhere near.

Adrian Flux are asking £448 (was £404 last year :( ) with £150 excess, but charge £25 for changes mid-term (I'm planning on putting a new exhaust on so that's an extra £25 then), and £14 for key cover, which is included with Brentacre.

Hmmm, if A-Plan can't do anything then it's look like I'm stuck with Adrian Flux but what's the point of being a sensible, accident-free driver if there's no rewards – just a hike in fees every year? Makes you want to write the thing off and get a new 'un

Have you mentioned to Brentacre about the deal you've been offered with AF?

Not much help I know but looks like I'm going back with CK as they matched the lowest quote I got on line £290 - £350 excess protected no claims etc but I'm 51 and live in rural norfolk

Yeah, I told them but it's the same underwriter – Highway – so nothing doing
