iPod Connection Confusion

Featured Replies

I sold my 54-plate Octy Elegance (with an original, boot-mounted CD-changer and a Columbus head unit) to a friend when I bought my Superb II. He now wants to fit an iPod connector and has been told by his dealer that it needed to be ordered with the car and can't be retro-fitted.

Having had a trawl, it's obvious to me that such a connection can be retro-fitted, but I'm a little confused due to the amount of info and the best option available.

So ......

  • Can you simply plug something into the back of the head unit that will allow him to play his iPod via the Aux selector, given that he's already got a CD changer fitted?
  • If "No," are there alternative solutions? Is that even the best way to go?
  • Does the fitting of an MDI allow better/additional features?
  • Can the Columbus be used as a control for the iPod in any circumstances?

I know that's a lot of questions, but I'm a definite numpty when it comes to retro-fitting practically anything, with today's multi-block connectors! :)

While I'm writing, he also seems to think that his Xenon self-levellers are too low. Are there mechanical adjusters, or is it a VAG-Com job?

Finally, where does he get hold of VAG-Com and what cabling is needed from a laptop?

Many TIA! :)

I can help you with a couple of those

AFAIK there was no aux connection on the back of the standard Symphony Stereo to allow for Ipod connection but you can get aftermarket wiring harnesses which allow you to run an ipod off of the connector for the CD changer. They were something like £60-80 when I last looked but I never bought one as I didn't like the idea of losing the CD changer.

The Xenons can be manually adjusted as part of the whole headlight unit using the screws on the top.
