strange vibration problem

Featured Replies

Hi, I hope somebody can help. My Octavia 1 VRS has recently started giving me issues! I rarely use the car and it has only done 16000 miles from new.

The problem is that when I am on the motorway, all seems fine until I hit about 70mph, then the car starts to feel like its vibrating and harsh through the

pedals and body.

The car was sitting for about 6 weeks in all the recent snow and cold weather on the roadside, so I thought perhaps it was flat spots on the tyres, so to be sure, I got all

four tyres replaced for brand new ones and had a four wheel alignment done too.

To give a more thourough description of the problem, below is a list of recent problems that may be associated with this vibration:

1. Vibration felt through body and pedals (it feels like I am running over the cats eyes or bump strip on the motorway - but not as harsh)

2. It seems fine when I first set off, but after about 3 miles or so on the motorway the vibration/harshness begins.

3. It could also be explained like there is a bulge in the tyre - obviously there isn't but has the same sensation.

4. It appears that when I hit about 70mph the symptoms begin and remain then at any speed, be it 70mph, 50mph or 20mph!

5. The problem is still there if I drop the clutch and let the engine tickover whilst travelling at speed or even if i turn the engine off whilst traveling at speed!

6. It is definatley a rhythmic pattern to the vibration/harshness.

7. I have noticed the car making a pinking sound recently on cold startup and cold acceleration, this dissapears as the car warms up.

8. The car did have a very lumpy tickover a couple of weeks back, but this seems to have cleared.

9. Sometimes the car has a jumpy feeling when decelarating - ie engine braking.

10. The brakes were awful when I began using the car after being laid up! They were juddering and pulling me all over the place! Seems to have cleared now but do still get some wobble through steering when breaking.

I was just wodering if anyone has any ideas. I was wondering if it could be like a slight missfire?

Could it be the brakes binding on-off-on-off once they have warmed up?

Not sure really but it may help the brakes if you do a few hard stops from about 80 down to 20, that should clear any crap off the pads and disks.

Obviously on a quiet road with nothing behind you, and then let them cool before parking up.

For the vibration to only start when you get to a certain speed/revs, and then stick, I can't really think of anything "normal" that it's likely to be off-hand.

Have you tried driving at the same revs in a lower gear, to see if you can start it that way?

Does the frequency or harshness of the vibration vary with road speed and/or engine revs once it's started?

I'd start by making sure the engine mounts are OK - especially the dogbone.

Make sure the caliper pins are greased and look for uneven wear on the brake pads as this may indicate a sticking caliper.

I have known CV joints and wheel bearings give the same kind of problem, but a CV normally gives itself away when you turn and 16k is probably too early for a wheel bearing.

I have done the hard braking from 80 - 0 quite a few times now to no avail!

The car does it in any gear or even out of gear coasting!

It is funny you mention wheel bearing! I had to do a rear bearing at 14 k! Unbelievable! I wonder if it could be a front one?

I'm thinking of perhaps having a good look underneath and a wiggle! Maybe change the discs too and grease the caliper pins! Even though they are virtually unused!

I was just thinking, on a couple of occasions over a large bump the suspension has made a large klonk sound! I wonder if this is related?

Have you checked if any of the springs have broken? They usually go near the top only a couple of inches down.

Sticking brake caliper is my guess, if its been sat for a while. Once the pad/disc heats up from the friction the vibration will happen at all speeds till u stop/cool it

try getting all 4 wheels balanced.this is the first thing you should do as its the cheapiest and i think this will solve your problem.also if tyre pressure is to low or to high this can also cause your problem. the correct pressure should be put in first then check balance on wheels
