Quiet Police Car Noise (Turbo?)

Featured Replies

On my 69k Miles 1.9 PD TDi L&K Octavia, I've noticed at low speeds, i.e. when driving around the roads, that there is a very very quiet whistle - it sounds a little bit like a police car rising and falling in tone as I accellerate. It's quite quiet; it doesn't sound like anything too much is amiss - but I was wondering if it is anything I should worry about. I'm only used to driving petrol; I'm thinking it could be a normal turbo induction type noise, but I thought I would ask just in case anything is amiss.

The car is a one owner ex-fleet car with FDSH and seems well looked after, so I'm not too concerned; but thoguht I'd ask as it's not a noise I recognise.

You'll know when its on its way out, it will really whine.

I found that whilst mine was idling for long periods of time the turbo would all of a sudden start gathering alot of speed (causing it to whine quite loud) a quick blip of the throttle settled this down for maybe a minute or so.

A brisk overtake on the motorway, pulling from 5th gear at around 65mph saw it let go in a considerable fashion at 125k on varible servicing.

Genuinely thought the police were coming up my road today, but it turned out to be a PD130 golf speeding up and slowing down between the speed bumps. It sounded baaaad.

I had a similar experience with a Nissan XTRAIL 2.2 TDi ( it also souded like a police car), and it was the turbo which I had to have changed , fortunately it was still in the warranty period

.Hope yours is not so bad.

My old octy PD140 made this noise, and did from the day I bought it. right up to when I sold it 3.5 years later. I travelled more than 70K miles with that very quiet noise and the car always performed perfectly. Sold the car at 93K miles and still going strong on its original turbo.

That's reassurring.

Sounds like it is normal, it isn't "really" whining, it's quite a quiet sound, so I shan't worry unless it gets much louder.

I'm sure that the subliminal noise is sending some sort of message into my sub-conscious brain that ensures I drive carefully ;o)

I had the same problem on my old Focus, for about 10K miles up until I recently sold it and the turbo didn't ever go. Pretty much everything else on the car went wrong, but the turbo was fine! ;)

My 06 PD 140 Octy 2 has done this since I've owned it and no problems, think it is quite normal.

I've had 3 diesel Fiestas in recent years and 2 of them made that noise all the time. A quiet whistle, as if the police car was some considerable distance away , rising and falling with speed and disappearing once you got up above 40mph in 3rd gear.

This sound is quite normal, it is like a low pitched "hollow" whistle which builds up as you accelerate from low speeds, then should disappear as the revs build up, there was a similar thread a while back in the Fabia1 section called "help needed" IIRC which I contributed to, this is just the same, it is the turbo building up revs to start boosting, the only important things to remember is don't gun the engine from cold or straight away when starting up and allow it to tick over or drive gently before turning it off. Most people don't realise that a turbo can run at temperatures up and perhaps over 600 C and speeds up to and maybe over 200,000 rpm when it is working at full boost!

Ian.

Mine does it, my seat leon PD130 did, and My 2.5 TDI Nissan Navara did.

My Fabia did this too. Turned out to be a hole in the boost pipe big enough to put your thumb through. A bend turbo shaft and nearly all the blades missing from the turbo. I would get it checked.

My 06 PD 140 Octy 2 has done this since I've owned it and no problems, think it is quite normal.

Mine too, ever since I bought it new in October 07.

I reckon that's the EGR.

I have the same on my 06 Octy. Got the car with 100,000 on the clock & now up to 128,000 with the same sound.

I still have the same super performance & economy I had when I brought the car!

I had the turbo replaced first then the EGR around 9 months later matey.

Once the turbo was changed it stopped doing so.
