Changing wishbones ...few questions

Featured Replies

Iv just bought some new Wishbones as the rear bush and balljoint is fubarred. (cars done 120k so could do with freshening up)

Im gonna have a go at changing it myself so just have a few questions

I did have a quick peak while i was lubing the ARB rubbers

Before i start what tools are required? i guess its a 18mm Socket/Spanner and 19mm? Is the top nut for the rear Bush 18mm?

Whats the best way to remove the balljoint?

do i need to remove any other components to change the wishbones such as link rods

Also anyone got the Part number for the 2 long bolts that pass through the bushes?

any tips or tricks welcome

Sorry for all the questions just want to have all the right things for job

On each Wishbone you will find the following bolts.

1x Wishbone rear bolt(SN90484003)

1x Wishbone front bolt(SN10262201)

Here is a drawing to show the part to the wishbone so you can see the bolts and nuts where required

Front bolt is item 5

Rear bolt is item 6

Rear nut is item 7

I replaced all my bolts when I did the bushes.

Front Bush is a Powerflex one

Rear Bushes is a Audi TT one

what size is the nut (item 7)

also the Ball joint but seems like it will be quite tight to undo under the driveshaft...any problems with this at all?

Yep that is about right. You will also need 13mm socket for the ball joint bolts, Be warned those bolts can snap in the ball joint brackets.

I got spare bolts and brackets just in case as 4 of mine snapped. Ball joint bolts are p/n N10127707(replace old p/n N10127706) I think. Qty = 6(item 13 in pic)

The locking plate is p/n 1J0407175 qty = 2(item 2 in pic)

Also you will need a Torque Wrench

Whats the best way to remove the balljoint?

You don't need to remove the ball joint which is attached to the hub, just remove the bolts and brackets that are fixed to the wishbones, and the wishbone will slide off them.

do i need to remove any other components to change the wishbones such as link rods

No the link rods are attached to the ARB and suspension Strut, they can stay there

I quoted p/n and picture in the previous post.

Tips would be mark around the ball joint bolts on the wishbone before you remove them so when you refit new wishbones the alignment will be not too far out. You still need to get wheel alignment done as the new wishbones will be sitting different with new bushes in them.

18mm I think. You need to put a ring spanner on it as you won't get a socket over if i can remember

Answered this on last post

cheers

In that case you will need a ball joint seperator. as they are pretty tight in the hub, and be careful not to hit the drive shaft rubber boot as they are dam close.

How come you went for audi tt bushes on the rear?

Im thinking of maybe changing my superpro one's as just recently finding them a bit harsh. Thanks.

How do you undo the nut on the ball joint?

Guessing that it's a job for a ring spanner as there doesn't look enough room for a socket?

I went for Audi TT because the Power flex ones looked like this after only 4 months

Although Power flex have improved can't be bothered to try them out again in case they were just as bad. Once you get a reputation it is hard to shift it.

Went with Audi TT as they are solid bushes compared with the standard VRS ones and a lot of SEAT , VW users recomended them. I can say that are a great combination with the set up I have and won't use anything else now.

Yep correct,

Lots of WD40 soaked in over night or as early as possible then a good spanner and a extension bar on the end of the spanner if needed. First I would tighten the nut up to break the balljoint / nut. (only very slightly) then undo slowly. You need to retighten and undo nut and spray more WD40 so to slowly clean out ball joint thread.

Thanks for that, those powerflex bushes are shocking :o ! Would i benefit anything by changing mine to audi tt items? The superpros are good but just seem what with the crap roads now a little bit harsh at times. Cheers

Difficult to tell really, as I have not tried the superpro ones which I have heard are quite harsh.

I would say that the TT ones would be a little more forgiving. The fact that they are solid means they should last longer than the OEM VRS ones.

The material in them is the same as the OEM VRS so in theory should soak up the road better.

Cheers

Thanks mate  Yeah think your probaly right i may change the rear ones then can i ask another favour? :smirk: Do you have the part numbers for the audi tt bushes and how much are they?

When i had the super pros with the standard suspension they seemed ok but since having fsd's and h&r it seems to be very harsh! to harsh so this could be the answer. ;)

Changed them today

Big thanks to Bowders...if you have the right tools then its a doddle althought the ball joint did take some persuading to come out

just need to get the tracking done :)

misplaced my breaker bar so have to use a dumbell bar on the end of the rachet, but did the job!

Nice one, glad I could help....

Couple of quick points, all bolts that have an angle (such as most of the bolts here including the 3 balljoint lockplate bolts) are stretch bolts and one time only. You don't just use a torque wrench you then put an angle on them having first ensured that the torque wrench was moving at the time it clicked (or the torque on the bolt could have been higher and you wouldn't know).

Further, the camber has to be set after this operation and the tracking also if bushes are replaced. The camber is adjusted via the lockplate bolts and shifting the entire subframe if necessary to share errors across the sides. It is acceptable practice to just put 20nm on the lockplate bolts, settle the suspension, check and set the camber (using 20nm again) re check then put the angle on. Otherwise you would be throwing bolts away every time you did an adjustment!

The superpro bushes are excellent and to my mind have a number of advantages over stock and powerflex. There are others out there, but I have only used stock, powerflex and superpro extensively so can only comment on them.

same i was quoted £200 + VAT to get my bushes done, in the end i just bought 2 new wishbones with bushes and ball joints then fitted them myself

not sure where Bowders got his from (not sure if it was a OE Equivalent or OE replacement) Both are on ebay

you will need to get the bushes pressed out/in unless you use something like this

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/92625-fabia-wishbone-bush-replacement-diy-guide/

An audi dealer should sort you out lol

Or TPS

I think it's 8N0 407 181B

Or maybe 8N0 407 151 D

Or you could just ask for a rear wishbone bush
