MPH Speedometer

Featured Replies

I have been studying the current speedometer markings and must say was very surprised to find that there are no actual

designated marks for the most popular speed limits ie 30/50/70.

It would appear that the same speedo head is used as for the KPH display unit and just re calibrated for the UK market.

Also I think I have read somewhere on this forum that the Maxi-dot display for the speed read out is opposite to that of the speedo.

So when the speedo is showing MPH the Maxi-dot is showing KPH, again not very helpful.

The actual markings on the speedo head are in 5 MPH increments and this does not make for easy reading

I find this very unusual and wonder how other members get on with this difficulty. Is there any work around this problem ?

Order a vRS :)

vRS has markings in 10mph increments until 80...

Unless its a Furby vrs.... 10mph increments 'til 90, then in 20mph blocks. caught me out the first time i went for a ton on a private road and found i was doing 110.... :wonder:

I use a Talex GPS speed camera unit and it displays the true speed

BUT my vRS has got 10mph increments

From where I see it that would only make the situation worse for me.

I think this only goes to show that there are potential problems with the current markings on the speedo.

Why would anyone NOT show the 30/50/70 marks clearly - other than the small cost involved in doing so?

The MK1 vRS also had its speedo in 10mph increments upto 80MPH and then in 20MPH increments from there upto 160MPH, same with the golf and other VAG cars. My dads Fabia Greenline has the speedo markings going up in 20s, I have now got used to it and dont give it a second thought when I am driving it.

This is the same with my FL VRS Octy...the only problem I've had is wondering why the acceleration has tailed off so suddenly, only to realise that it hadn't, just the speedo was moving half as fast above 80... :)

on mine (no Maxidot) the odometer changes to kmh when moving.

That is an option that you can turn off and on as desired. Our Maxidots display kph by default but can be set for mph should we decide to take the car on a trip to the UK or America. It's a feature that i can see a use for for UK residents who may drive in Europe but it's not practical use for us at all.

Why would that be worse? Your complaint was that you didn't get markings at 30/50/70 which the vRS does have (as well as a marking at 40)

If you're doing over 80 in this country does it really matter that the markings are now every 20 mph? (meaning the small lines between are 5mph increments) as you are speeding anyway

Although the manual states you can change this, on the UK models it's fixed in kph, shame, as I'd like mph on the digital display with the ability to change it to kph if I go to mainland Europe or the Republic of Ireland...

We cant do that here in the UK, since the EU dictated that all cars sold in the UK must show KMH and MPH. The facelift dash does not have KMH on the maing speedo, so it must bu EU law be shown elsewhere.

I thought this was going to get on my nerves as I found it a bit odd when I had my test drive, but actually its surprising how quickly you get used to it. I don't really understand why they changed the speedo on some models but not on the VRS, but such is life I guess. On our pre-FL Scout we have increments of 10mph up to 80 then 20mph after that which I found pretty annoying when we first got the car, but you just get used to it and learn to be a bit more careful about how fast you're actually going ;)

In that case I'm sure somebody with a VAGcom and some nouce would more that likely be able to "solve" the issue and put them back to optional kph or mph. If it works that way on our cars it will only be a software issue on yours. Software can be sorted.

My 2004 octy vrs (mk1) doesnt have this, mine goes from 0 to 160 mph in 20 increments. :S
