poor starting when warm

Featured Replies

My 05 1.9tdi 105pd elegance is having starting problems when warm.Starting from cold first thing in the morning it fires up (after waiting for glowplug light to go out) immediately. After running for about 15 minutes (when water temp is 90degrees as per normal) if I park up to go shopping for 10-15 minutes it takes several seconds to fire , sometimes it will take two turns of the ignition . However, if I leave it to cool down for a couple of hours it will start immediately. The car has done 44000miles and is regularly serviced (annually) at a main dealer . I have had the car from new and this problem has only started in the last couple of months.Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for that link, very interesting. My battery is nearly 5 years old so I suppose it is ready for a replacement. Will shop around tomorrow for prices and get it changed . I'll post the results shortly. Thanks again.

for whats its worth, my car still does this and has since I bought it used years ago, Im not worried about it now, because my research came to the following conclusion:

Its a common fault when either the battery or starter gets worn, when warm the car will not inject fuel until the starter is spinning at a certain speed ( cant remember the figure) but it will inject when cold which is why it fires up first go when cold! Its not going to do any harm, so i would rather let sleeping dogs lie and spend the money on mods instead! besides you could waste money on the Battery only to find its the starter thats worn and vice versa!

If it were just a case of the starter getting hot, then it would have had this problem from new. As things heat up, electrical items tend to increase in resistance, draw less current and have less power.

Starter motors do tend to lose efficiency and slow down with age due to mechanical resistance. This does cause greater current to be drawn.

You can reach a point where even a new battery won't help but in most cases it does fix the problem. A good test is to try jump starting the car when warm.

 o/k New battery fitted by main dealer (£105) a couple of weeks ago. Have done identical journeys a few times since then without any starting problems at all. So thanks rwbaldwin for the advice . it really does work.

Hi mike. After chatting about this last night in the pub it'll be interesting to see if this fixes i

You can also regrease the starter motor gearing. This makes less of an improvement than a new battery but it can help. If you have to crank for less than 5 seconds it may make enough of a difference for a while.

Remove the starter motor and give the 'Bendix' gear a good clean. DO NOT GREASE IT.

On the starter motor, undo the 2 long bolts and the nut that secures the earth strap. Pull the actual motor away from the concentric gear housing.

Remove the concentric gear cover and remove the 3 satellite gears.

Remove all the old grease.

Using moly grease, regrease the outer ring, the 3 satellite gear pins, the motor shaft gear, both sides of the satellite gears and the inside of the gear cover.

Reassemble and put the starter back in.

Or, you can fix this with vagcom (vcds).

with engine hot, connect to 01- engine, 16-security acces, write 12233, enter, go to 10- adaptation, channel 01 and modify defaul value from "0" to "100", test , save and yes. exit from module, start the car/. if this don't work, repeat the procedure modify value to 200, maximum is 300.

Good lock.

This doesn't fix the problem in the same way that disconnecting the temperature sensor doesn't fix it.

It causes the engine to overfuel at idle by increasing IQI (the injector quantity at idle). You would normally only adjust this value if you change injector size.

It is taking advantage of the fact that the decision to base starting on engine rpm is determined by IQ which is turn determined in part by temperature.
