Do like the idea of it being compact and easy to remove!

Me too it is really appealing. I've just spotted this as well.

Under seat sub

If this was mounted under the passenger seat I would imagine it would drastically change the cabin sound?

  • The Octy II stereo uses as filter capacitor (too crude to call it a 'crossover') in series with the tweeter. The cap is c. 8uF. I simply popped out my tweeters and replaced these caps with 3.3uF. T

Anything will be an improvement, but bear in mind that with a good HU and time alignment a sub in the boot will sound just as good as a sub in the cabin. Any sub should also allow you to dial back the LF hitting your components, which will make for less farty doors

Most of this depends on a decent HU with crossover, time alignment and EQ adjustment - bear that in mind.

As above. I'd advise looking towards a proper boot mounted sub and amp.

Those Pioneer things are a large compromise. The first 'spare wheel sub' only has 2 x 4" sub woofers !

With a quoted low response of 50Hz it isn't really a sub woofer at all and would barely keep up with a set of well installed front components.

If you really want a spare wheel enclosure, you are best making one out of a fibreglass mould and using a decent sub.

Have a look over on talkaudio and ask there for some assistance :)

While I agree with your comments not everyone has the time or expertise to build there own sub enclosures let alone ability to work out optimum parameters specific to the drive units your using etc. The Bolero is a compromise in itself and for me I just want a quick solution that doesnt require major surgery to the car and that can be removed with ease.

Looking further into what is available does reveal a big hole in many of the top aftermarket incar hifi manufacturers! There arent many active compact sub devices that go below 50hz and that dont cost the earth! Going to a local Pioneer dealer to see if they can aquire said unit and give it a go!

Do have some of my old Incar hifi late80s90s era stuff that I might for the fun of it bring down from the loft and have a play just to see what i might be missing lol!

Yep thats a good shout! I used to love my incar when I still lived at home. I had lots of top end kit in my cars, but I am no longer in need of bursting my ear drums at 150db, just a good overall sound would be good.

Guys, 50Hz may not be the last word, but if it allows you to high pass your fronts at 100-125hz or so, it'll fix a lot of the farting that the OP was about.

I understand that not everybody is into it, nor should they be. That's where my posts have been coming from.

I've got an 07 Octavia vRS PD with a Stream head unit and it's frequency response is pathetic! I have had to set the tone controls to absurd values to even listen to it and it's still crap :o

Bass is not too bad, treble is OTT but there is absolutely no lower middle at all :o A direct comparison with the same CD in the Golf will show up a myriad of deficiencies in the Stream head unit.

I'm, in the process of replacing mine with a Pioneer BT3200-BT Double DIN unit, which instantly corrects most of the defects and sounds brilliant, static...

Once I've sorted all the all the auxiliary & connectivity issues with the BT3200 I will post a blog and let you in on all the issues and how I eventually, hopefully, solve them...

If only there were more weekends and less workdays! :S
