Octavia 2 PD High Mileage

Featured Replies

Hi

Im looking into buying one of these, good value second hand, the only slight worry I have is that Injectors etc seem to be mad money if they went wrong. Also potential issues with Clutch / Flywheel and Particulate filters have me concerned.

Anyone put my mind at rest ? or give me an idea of parts up to say 150k ish

Its interesting they are moving to CR instead of PD

I think this is a general problem with all modern cars, the diesel engines give the power but so many things to go wrong these days a spurious fault and garages who can`t fix it can make a good car not worth fixing

TIA

Al

I've a 1.9 PD at 143k the engine its self is spot on, not had an issue other than the EGR valve leaking and the turbo letting go at 125k (the turbo did sound rough at the time).

Yo, mines an 05 2.0 PD Tdi and its on 155k.

I am over the moon with the motor and it seems very reliable - I think I'm still on the same clutch / flywheel and turbo too.

I have an slightly anoying engine shake at idle (seems common) and small jerky throttle at low speeds, but not everyone notices things like that - I'm just an obsessive paranoide :D

Bar that it's a stonking motor. I've driven one at 30k and I cant tell the difference in power or handing compared to that and my high mileage beast. Even a mechanic said it drove like it was half its age.

Mine hardly uses any oil at all (cant remember the last time I topped it up) and does not lose water. Does not smoke badly and I return 50+mpg on motorway runs, time after time.

Get one!

Without sounding stupid what is the EGR valve & what does it do??

Cheers

Exhaust Gas Return valve, does what it says on the tin really. Its for emissions, turbo diesels have all had them for some time now.

I just clicked over 300,000kms this week. 2 turbos and 1 DMF but the engine and gearbox are as sweey as a nut. I still get the 15,000km service interval before the oil light comes on. Service it regularly with the proper oil and don't labour the engine in too high a gear and it should serve you well.

plantman ... the jerky throttle at low speeds ..... search on here for the cage mod ... basically you just need to unplug the mass air flow sensor, and fill the socket full of silicon grease (maplins 6 or 7 quid) .... makes the connection between MAF and ECU more sound and less likely to get **** data from stray electrical signals ... also good diesel and some millers diesel sport is all good :)

No particulate filter on the 1.9 or 2.0PD except the 4x4/scout/vrs.

But quite easy to remove aparently

Thanks dude, tried both an no effect....tis something else on mine ;)

that sucks ..... have you tried the throttle recalibration routine? it really smoothed out my low end throttle response. The engine shake could be just the fact that the pd is a bit of an old tractor and you're reading a bit too much into it (i'm constantly guilty of that one).

Yea tried that, presume you mean the battery unplugged and left for 2 hours then ignition on for x mins with battery connected?

I think you are right...it seems most if not all PD's have some un-smoothness which is a characteristic ;)

actually i did the throttle into the shagpile, turn on ignition for maybe 30 seconds, turn off ignition, and release throttle potentiometer reset method (dont quote me on the exact process, it was a few weeks ago i did it and my memory isn't worth a crap these days, but look through some of my old posts and i have it described exactly) .

point being, i have exactly the same engine as yours, admittedly with a remap, but it smoothed everything out considerably. i always felt like the throttle wasn't responding efficiently, and trust me, in a remapped octy you notice it much more.....
