Four out of five BMW 1-series think their car is front-wheel drive

Do BMW make a FWD at the moment?

I can't think of one

To be fair, im sure most non car geeks dont really have much of a clue if their car is FWD or RWD.

Mini?

They obviously don’t press the loud pedal enough in the wet, or appreciate the relatively uncorrupted steering. They also have not realised that RWD is the main reason they have a second glove box where the boot should be :D

Ahh yes I forgot the Mini was now made by the Fatherland

So, 4/5 of customers are paying several grand for a nice blue and white badge?

Dang!, That business model is miiiiiiiiiiiiiighty fine!

This makes no sense. 4/5 1-series owners should be shot.

Apart from RWD and some stonking engines, what sets the 1-series apart from its rivals?

A blue and white badge, do keep up at the back of the class.

Edit: sorry I'm being unfair, they also have good VED/BiK/tax rates so those with company cars may not know anything technical about their cars but know they save some money.

What I find astonishing is the fact that BMW dealers go to great lengths to tell you the car is RWD, 50/50 balance etc. It’s like going to an Audi garage, buying a Quattro and thinking it is also FWD. perhaps a lot of people questioned were the second owner? My neighbour across the road has a 1 series and she knows it’s RWD (especially after the snow :D) and I think you can take it as read that I know mine is RWD. theres no substitute for fun emoticon-0105-wink.gif

Strange thing is that some Quattro's are FWD.

'All the gear and no idea' springs to mind :(

A bonnet which is 1.5 times too long for the rest of the body? Shame because I like the 1 series rear of the A-pillars.

I like the long bonnet as it means the engine is pushed well being the front wheels. 50/50 is king :D

Having just driven a S4 with lots of clever suspension technology etc I found that you can make a nose heavy car handle well, but it still isn’t as delicate as a 3 series in the way it corners. Very impressive though and properly quick :)

my father in law has a 1 series diesel, and i'm very impressed i never liked the 1 series till he got it, but it has really poor traction in the wet and spins the wheels a lot, the turning circle and fill lock on steering makes roundabouts and the tight turn into our driveway so much easier!!!!

Huh!? :o

I found mine spins the wheels as soon as the tyres are about 25% worn. Up to that point it isn’t too bad in the wet, especially as it delivers nearly 300lb/ft from very low down.

I assume he means the A3, where they are FWD most of the time and the haldex makes them RWD when they lose grip?

Not really FWD though, just AWD when it's needed.

Ah that would make sense emoticon-0148-yes.gif

or drive one in the snow

when I mentioned to one guy at work (who thinks he knows about cars) that I had a couple of hundred kilos of weights in the boot to aid traction in the snow he said it would make it worse as it would transfer weight away from the front wheels

Back in my day………………..<………yawn>……………… my dad and his friends used to put bags of sand/cement etc in the boots of their Chevettes. On their skinny tyres they managed to get up some pretty impressive hills in the snow. Mind you they had a lot of local knowledge of which hills to avoid :D

Big bag of spuds has the same effect.

Rear Engined plus RWD with a tiny boot up front has to be the worst though. You can't even throw a load of weight over the front wheels.

Wouldn't have fancied taking out a 911 in the snow I have to admit.
