Road noise?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Bought my Black 07 plate Fabia VRS a couple of weeks ago and must say, very impressed so far, except for one thing.

Don't know if anyone can help but intermittently I'm getting what I can only describe as some really bad road noise.

It seems to come and go at different speeds and different road surfaces. It's quite a rhythmical noise and doesn't seem to alter with speed. Sounds almost like it might be something flapping around under the car, but I can't see anything obviously loose.

I've read quite a lot on the forums about tyre noise and wheel bearing issues.

I always find that intermittent problems like this have a habit of temporarily disappearing whenever you take it back to the dealer, so before I do that I thought I'd ask if anyone else had any ideas what could be causing this noise?

Tyres wearing out?

Some tyre get more noisy as they get further down the tread thickness.

Tyre roar was my first thought too. What make of tyres, and how much tread is left?

Tyres are a bit of a mixture.

On the front a pair of Roadstone N3000's with plenty of tread left

On the back nearside a Bridgestone Turanza and on the offside a Milanza Hero. Again there seems to be plenty of tread left on the two rears.

I'm not much of an expert. Could such a mix of makes account for the noise?

not a mix as such....noise is almost certainly tyre noise tho...different tyres hav different compounds and all sound different.

I'd say tyre roar too - Roadstones are made in in a Korean factory by Nexen - budgets in other words. I'd be swapping them for different ones for a kick off, you might find that makes all the difference. I had a full set of low profile budget tyres on my old Octy which had 17" alloys and the tyre roar especially at motorway speeds was almost unbearable!

Thanks for your help.

Two new Pirelli P Zero Nero's will be fitted tomorrow morning to see how much difference they make.

Mine makes some lovely 'singing' noises with the tyres when they get near to being replaced.

Guess you will find out tomorrow if that was the problem, fingers crossed they solve it :)

On the way to work I have the benefit from driving over 3-4 different surfaces, all make a rather different noise. Worst is the new surfaced patch of road, it gives a nice whine over that... is an older bit of road, is like a small biplane taking off lol all my tyres have at least 5mm on, front two are about 2 months old

other cars on the same roads are fine, I think the fabia is an acoustic masterpiece

Just to add, the fronts are uniroyal rainsport 2's and the rear, michelin pilot premacys
