Bluetooth/3 Network

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

My first post here.

I am getting a new Superb in May with the bluetooth option fitted. I just read that it doesn't work with 3 network. As it happens my contract with 3 end in April so I can change to a different network. I was looking at Sim only with Tesco Mobile, my current phone is Nokia E65.

I spoke to 3 and they say there is no reason that their network will not work.

Can anyone confirm that the bluetooth will definitely not work on 3. If I change to Tesco will that work OK. Is the E65 a phone that is supported.

Sorry to ramble. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Phil

According to skoda "3" will not work correctly with full functionality because they do not allow Rsap they may connect bluetooth but you will not have it working correctly, i.e. access to the phone book etc.

it wont be the 3 sim card limiting access to the skoda kit though. Your Nokia phone will have a 3 branded firmware installed which has rsap disabled, and also sim locked to the 3 network, to get over this you will need to hack the phone to flash a standard Nokia firmware and also get the phone unlocked to allow another networks sim. It would be far easier to buy another Nokia handset with another contract.

3 does nto work as it uses the gprs/3g hence the name 3, part of the network for phone calls and only uses the 2g band when it can't get a 3g signal. rSAP wont work on 3 as the bluetooth in the car effectively borrows your simcard details and then the inbuilt bluetooth becomes the phone using the car aerial etc. This is only designed for 2g voice signal and as 3 send voice over other mobile operators data networks it wont work.

It is the same as if you have a rSAP phone connected you are unable to browse the web with the phone as the phone no longer has control of the signal and is put into flight mode disabling 3g as well.

OK, no expert with regards to 3g etc, but I have a Nokia 6220c with 3. It pairs with my Superb with full functionality ie phone book etc. Excellent bit of kit!!

Olly has pretty much hit the nail on the head, here.

3 are principally a 3G network provider, meaning that they only have 3G cell towers. Where they have no coverage of their own, they buy access to someone else's 2G network (o2, I believe). Obviously, 3 want to ensure that your phone is connected to their cell towers for as much of the time as possible. Every time you connect to the 2G network, they have to pay o2 for the privilege.

With this in mind, 3 handsets do not allow you to select between using the 3G or 2G network. On my SIM free Nokia E71, I can choose three network connection modes:

- 3G only

- 2G only

- 3G with fallback to 2G

On three phones, the only selection available is 3G with fallback to 2G.

So, to the Superb. The bluetooth module in UK Superbs is effectively a phone. It uses the rSAP protocol to 'borrow' the details from your SIM card, thereby letting it connect to the network with your number. However, the module that Skoda use only supports 2G networks, which means that your 3 sim would be forced to connect to o2, even when 3 coverage is available.

From what I understand, the 3 SIM prevents this from happening.

That's why Skoda say that 3 isn't supported.

Bagpuss.

i have a factory unlocked phone which connects and shows phone book .but i have no service. im on 3

The issue will be cars fitted with older GSM (no 3G support) modules.

As the Three is a 3G/4G only network (with no 2G/GSM) then they can't connect to the network.

To get around this your options are:

a. switch networks

b.  change module to a newer one that supports 3G

c. change module to an ever better one that supports rSAP and HFP (will work with any phone on any network)

My previous rSAP only module did work on Three but was very flaky and showed as being on Orange.

Got a HFP one and now no problems. Phone can be on 3G or 4G and it works fine. It also now works with the other half's iPhone.

3 network WILL 100% connect via rSap, all you need to connect without a problem is a 3C8-035-730-B or 3C8-035-730-C module. If you use a later module the rSap will not work. I have the 3C8-035-730-B module in my superb and my wifes fabia and connect to rsap with a very stable connection, and my son has the 3C8-035-730-C module in his superb and connects to rsap as well

cheers
