fuel consumption

Hi folks

Before i got my Octavia i often heard people say they were getting 50 miles to the gallon,I wonder if this information was got from the on board computer or from tank fill to tank fill

Does any one have any reliable information as to what is the norm for this engine

In my own personal car mixed driving when driven hard or with a good wind behind and really driving for economy the best i have had in six months running is 44miles to the gallon full tank to full tank

I would be pleased to here any information particular tank to tank records with normal mixed driving

thanks for any info given skodaman 61

You should be able to get at least 54 MPG on a long run . I had a '99 MK4 Golf 1.9 TDI with 142,000 miles on and could get 55 mpg easily . When late for work ( 60 miles away ) when fast driving ( 6.00 a.m.) it could drop to 44 mpg ( I won't say how I was going as it may incriminate me ). As experiment I drove at steady 60 mph for a week for each work journey and got 68 mpg ( boring !) . Computer mpg was frequently checked against brim to brim fill-ups and found to accurate ( 650 miles to a tankfull) . To achieve good mpg you need to use the torque and keep revs below 3,000. Have just taken delivery of new Octavia ( 1.9PD TDI) and can get 52 mpg with only 200 miles on clock & not run-in ( but havn't checked computer against tank fills yet).

They should easily do over 50mpg. My 110tdi averages about 49mpg, that's with a fair bit of hoofing about and town driving.

thanks folks for your replies

My daughter has Octavia 110 54 TDI and has had the dreaded sticky valve syndrome and with a £600 bill for a turbo i am a bit reluctant to drive my own at to lower revs in case mine goes the same way

I suppose I will have to find a happy medium between keeping my engine hot and hope to get a better economy

Thanks Skodaman 61

Hi

I have owned a 2001 90bhp Ambiente for nearly 2 1/2 years and have covered 48k in that time (got 153k on the clock now). I have a 35 mile commute and consisently achieve 60+mpg (according to on-board computer). Some trips have recorded upto 70mpg (again according to the on-board computer). Most driving is open road with the last 5miles or so is City driving and I do put my foot down on the open road!

44mpg sounds far too low for your car. Have you had codes read off the ECU to see if it has logged any faults? I would also check:

- Air filter (change 10-20k miles, don't leave to the recommended 40k!)

- MAF sensor (common fault)

- change fuel filter

- check timing on VAG-COM

- Vac hose pipes for turbo

If your car is fitted with VNT turbo (mine is despite most people saying that 90 ALH engine is not fitted with a VNT turbo) then you could have a problem with slightly sticky vanes. I had a similiar problem sticking in underboost, only slightly, but knocked off performance and fuel consumption, but has since sorted itself out. Again this can be checked for efficiency on VAG-COM.

There is also something that can be checked on the fuel pump itself - something Greg123 checked for me and adjusted, but for the life of me can't remember what it was, which also can affect fuel consumption and performance.

We also own a 2002 Fabia 100PD and the Octavia is far more economical - the Fabia struggles to get 50mpg!

Dan

I'd agree, 44 is way too low for a 90.

My commute is horribly fuel hungry (mostly single track roads so I can be accelerating from 0 - 50 every mile or 2), and I get better from a 110 commuting. Before I bought this car, I had a 90 on hire, and with 2 hours in an M25 traffic jam, 30 miles of free-running m/way, and some rush-hour town work, I got low 60s fill to fill.
