Mums Saab vs My Fabia.

Featured Replies

Mum's getting serious about getting a newer motor.

She currently drives a very late Saab 9000 on an S, 98 plate with 90k ish on the clock.

My Dad bought it new on lease for 2 years and then they bought it out and Mum had it.

I do 20 - 22 miles a day on a reasonable commute, not to stop starty but by no means a good run either.

I'm seriously tempted to take the Saab on as I'll get it for nearly nothing if I have to pay at all. But I would have to sell the vRS.

it's a 2.3 turbo auto petrol, reckon it's the 170bhp one.. not the 200bhp. Cream leather and dark metallic blue paint.

It's the anniversary with the full Aero body kit fitted by the factory. Full history (obviously, having been in the family the whole time).

I just dunno.. I need some help guys.. make me see reason!

If I got it It'd most likely be for modding. lower or hunt down some of the original Aero suspension & wheels etc etc..

Every time I think of it lowerd on smater wheels I want it, lol... but then I think about it now and I only want it cuz I've got attached to it!

with little work could look like this ya see.. lol

Those are nice cars right out the box, and respond well to mods (mate's blog http://www.sevenman.f2s.com/blog/?page_id=252 ).

My biggest question would be whether or not you're prepared for a sub-30mpg fuel bill? And the supplimentary how well you feel the much bigger car will suit?

SAAB's are terrible on fuel my 900 classic would be lucky if it saw 25 on a good run. They are however very nice to drive and funky cars. Like Ken said they are really big cars!

Just did a confused.com on it... only a ton more than the Fabia.. not to bad for a car that's heavier than a tank with an extra 400cc giving 40bhp over the Fabia.

lovely to drive, absolutely shocking on fuel!! depends whether you want a good drive or a low fuel bill you dont get both, and i think the heater unit on dads old 900 was bigger than the engine on my felicia lol

I'd think that the "slinky super swede" could just be ready to devour your wallet! Has it had the breather mods fitted and the chain changed, and the oil screen/pick up checked and cleaned, turbo replaced? If the answer to any of these questions is "no" then maybe let that one go! I've got a mate that does tend to buy the odd oldish SAAB - well about 8 96's, 2 95's, 2 99's 1 90, 2 9000's 1 900 - and currently owns/runs, a 96, a 99, a 9000,a TDI 9-3 and a 9-5 - the current 9000 just did not get the oil screen cleaned in time, the TDI 9-3 logs faults that can not be picked up on a scan tool - and drives like a Vectra (which is what it is), the 9-5 ate its turbo in France (trucked home - washed out intercooler and fitted new turbo) plus it loves new wheel bearings, the 99 was kerbed a year ago and has been sorted - and there is never enough time to play with the 96! If you are a SAAB addict then do it, if not walk away! Remember there will be monthly meetings and regional visits to make - as well as the odd trip to the "holy land" - ie Sweden!

the TDI 9-3 logs faults that can not be picked up on a scan tool

So did my Fabia

and drives like a Vectra (which is what it is)...

...Apart from the redundant brake circuits, rear wheel steering, far nicer interior and far more kit as standard. I think it only shares about 40% of the parts with the Vectra (Although the engine and box in the TID is a big bit). The 150 will get 50 mpg easily and it's quicker than a VRS :peek:

The 9-3 handles loads better than a Vectra C - courtesy of that rear wheel steering. Shame it eats tyres as a result too :giggle:

Thanks!

And Thanks everyone for your answers...

Mum, in all her wisdom called me yesterday and told me she was gunna keep it a bit longer! Which, actually.. Is the best out come cuz I can keep the Furby and Still keep an eye on the "Family" 9000! :D

How long shes keeping it for in another thing... Going by the list above it might not be very long... I'll be sure to pass it on as I suspect the answer to most questions is NO! Though, when did the breather mods get announced, and was it a Skoda service item as it was looked after by a decent Dealer for the 1st 50k or so. Then a decent specialist.. so chances are anything done on a service bulletin are done.

Watch this space.. give it 6 months and I might be able to start an interesting blog :D

That's terrible, I'll not let my mate into that secret - I just thought he (a SAAB driver) was driving it as a SAAB driver does!!

Only £190 road tax for an S plate car....

Only £190 road tax for an S plate car....

£205 from the 1st april for older cars that are over 1500cc i'm afraid!

under 1500 remains unchanged in a bid to get old big engines off the road, to me it will just mean seeing more untaxed cars :(
