Advice on buying a 2yr old Octavia Estate please

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have just started looking for a replacement for my Alfa 159 Ti 2.4 Sport Wagon, as its time to start thinking with my head rather than my heart, and I am hoping to get some advice.

As you can probably guess I am looking for one of the faster cars and my engine shortlist is the 2.0PD, the 2.0CR or the 1.8TSi.

How do you think these engines comapre?

What would be a typical mpg?

Are any of the colours particularly prone to stone chipping?

Are there any specific issues I should look out for?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.

Gary

The CR is only available on the vRS (and the new 1.6 diesel) I'm not sure exactly when it changed from PD to CR but I think it was mid 2008.

If you have the choice, then the CR is a much smoother engine than the PD with a slightly less abrupt power delivery, The PD punched you in the kidneys and then needed a change up so it could punch you again... The CR pushes you strongly further round the rev range before you need to change up and is a lot quieter than the PD too

I drive my CR vRS hatch with a fairly heavy right foot (think lead and then add some more weight) and I'm getting an average of about 42 mpg. Driven carefully I get more than that, but the performance is so accessible I can't help myself :)

I've not driven the 1.8 TSi but by all accounts it's a cracking engine but not as economical as the diesels...

Skoda have a new 2.0 CR 140bhp engine for the Superb so you will probably find it in Octavias soon.

The 140CR is in the Yeti too

Gary - I've been running a 2007 2.0 TDI (PD) Elegance estate from new and would highly recommend it. The PD is more gruff than the CR, but I would test drive one and check whether you find it OK. It has plenty of torque from idle (I know because my wife tends to drive it in the 1000-2000 rpm range!), and is excellent for overtaking in 3rd. I typically get around 46mpg - but out of London 50mpg is easily acheivable - it seems to be getting better - it has done 25k.

Mine is Flamenco Red (if you search for it on the forum, you should find picks) and has some minor stone chips, but I wouldn't say it is any worse than other cars I have owned.

I'm planning to upgrade to a Scout in summer.

Les.

Thanks for the advice so far, I will try and drive all 3.

Does anyone know what mpg the 1.8 typically does?
