In the market for an Octavia vRS....info/advice sought

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

Total newbie here! My car was recently written off so I'm in the market for a replacement and I've been pointed in the direction of an Octavia. Have to admit, from what I've seen they seem to offer a pretty darned good price/spec/performance ratio.

I've spotted a couple of second hand models that look good and I'm hoping to go to the garage tomorrow (Bickerton Skoda in Sheffield) and get a look and feel for them. Both models are 2.0 T FSI vRS - one is 2006 (06) going for £9995 (25000 miles and sat nav), the other is 2008 (08) going for £12995 (15000 miles but no sat nav).

I realise there's the obvious difference in price and that the newer 08 model is pushing me higher than I was originally planning to spend, but aside from that are there any real differences in terms of performance and spec between the two? Anything in particular I should check out on them?

I'd like to be able to add hands free phone and iPod connectivity too - is it likely either model would come with this? And if not, is it straight forward to add? Would be great to integrate them into the cars existing kit as much as poss...i.e. steering wheel controls etc.

Any help/info/advice would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks very much

Hi , mines a 2006 model, at that time there was varying specs , rear electric windows cruise etc , Me personally would go for the later car , but as you have no PX id want at least £200 off anyway as it is too expensive . Later cars had more spec as standard . In dash Sat - Navs look cool but are hopeless out of date in a week < new houses , roads etc> get an all singing and dancing tom tom with all europe, and america from Euro parts for£225 and blutooth for your phone. Cars mechanically identical Mine on right 2006, wills on left 2008DSC000482.jpg

Sorry to hear about the write off, but at least you've come to your senses like me and are looking at Octavias :)

Check the other specs apart from the SatNav, the 2008 model probably has rear electric windows, armrest etc and 18" wheels as opposed to 17" wheels on the 2006 model (unless it's been specced with the optional 18s and other kit...)

Satnav can be added after if you really want it, I'm happy with portable devices at the moment but am umming and ahhing about fitting a Columbus (MFD3) to mine... I'm assuming the 2006 model has the older Nexus (MFD2) SatNav which doesn't appear to have many glowing reports on this forum...

Performance should be identical between the two as it's the same running gear and engine

Thanks for the info - much appreciated.

pete8tch I think it's the 9100 my gf has in her car - I'll check it out. I guess that killls two birds with one stone too. If I'm going to be passing through Knutsford I'll give you a shout....

bluvrs2 nice looking pair of cars there! But yeh no hugely obvious differences from the outside - and if no major difference mechanically then I'll certainly give it some serious thought.

Hmmm....decisions decisions!!!

I've got my eye on the one at Sheffield (2006 black @ £9,995) too (was gonna go look at it next week - away for Easter at the moment) so I'd be interested to hear what it's like if you don't got for it!

I'm gonna be looking to add bluetooth and iPod connection too, Shark Performance in Mansfield seem like the place to go for them.

Well I went for a look today and yep, you guessed it......the '06 model had a big "SOLD" notice on it!! DOH!!!! Real shame cos it looked mint. So if you're still thinking of going to take a look, then I'd save your fuel! ;-) Unless it's you who's bought it....in which case, very good move fella! ;-)

Had a look at the '08 model and yes it was v nice but £3000 more.....that's a lot of dosh for me. Managed to get £300 knocked off without too much effort, but it felt like there wasn't any more room for manouvre on that front.

Soooo it might be the end of my vRS dreams at the moment. There was an '08 2.0 TDI (non-vRS....booo!) which was pretty good - but exactly what I'm going to do now I'm not sure. Damn....should have gone yesterday and got my name down for that '06 one!

Damn! Not me that's bought it. Very nearly put a deposit on it earlier in the week but didn't want to without seeing it!

OK, good news and bad news.....well maybe sort of inconvenient rather than bad!

Good news....managed to find another vRS! This one's an '07 plate too, so slightly newer, but it's a private sale. Not necessarily a terrible thing - less come back if something goes wrong, but potentially a much better price. It's done 24000 miles, has a full Skoda service history and the guys asking £9995 for it, but I spoke to him on the phone and he says he's prepared to negotiate.....so certainly room to manouvre. From the pics it looks like it's in top notch condition.

The bad/slightly inconvenient news is that it's in Birmingham....so quite a trek to go and see the thing!

Some advice if I may....I know the ESP issue is a potential pit-fall but from what I can tell, there's very little I can do to determine if the problem is going to crop up on this particular vehicle....is that right? Does anyone know of any half decent maintenance contracts it's possible to purchase (i.e. pay £x per year and you're covered for up to £y worth of repairs if something breaks down)?

And when I'm viewing the car, is there anything in particular that I should look out for?

Thanks...

Nope I've not been in one yet (well, not a moving one anyway!)....was hoping to test drive one today at the dealer but they said it was too late in the day so it looks like I'm going to have to go back to Sheffield in the morning to drive the '08 one....unless it would be poss to nip to yours tomorrow instead? (I'm tied up all day Sunday so no joy on that front) No idea if tomorrow is convenient for you or not? Absolutely no worries at all if it isn't, but if it is then that would save me a return trip to Sheffield!!

Big thanks for the offer....very much appreciated

Will pm you my no , will need to be after 12 but should be ok tho , better than a sheffield trip

the 07 plate car is about to come out of its 3 year warrenty, why dont you pay for a 2year skoda extended warrenty then you,ve got no worries....... btw i was going to part ex my 07 mint vrs, but the cheeky main dealers offered me a price on mine, and i quote" its gunna start with an 8 mate" this against a new vrs with all the extras at 21000 needless to say i,m keeping it and getting the extended warrenty.

What's the score with extended warranties? Are they transferable? Have to do it before the original runs out etc?

It looks like I'm in a similar position to slicendice and have been considering private sale cars but concerned about lack of warranty.

I got warranty direct on mine piece of mind cost you £225 a year  this is transferable and it was taken out after original had expired

Have you tried to claim at all?

Have heard lots of issues with aftermarket warranties not paying out...

I have got it in writing what you can claim for and is more comprehensive than dealers. It is not like the ones you used to see back street garages selling . Got a mate in the motor trade and he said they are respected
