Best diesel fuel?...

Featured Replies

So far I have refuelled 4 times in my Fabia, the first 2 times with Shell diesel, the next with BP, then back to Shell again. The BP fuel made the car feel a bit rough and less keen to rev, but now with Shell diesel back in it feels nice again!

Am I going a bit mad? Is Shell diesel better than BP? or perhaps it was the cold weather making the BP fuel feel poorer?

Any thoughts?... :)

I'd imagine there isn't a whole lot between them, and you'll drive yourself mad trying to figure out if there is or not... ;)

I use BP Ultimate Diesel

Purely psycological but works well, if rather costly.

I emailed Honest John (Telegraph motoring supplement) before I found Briskoda (and well before the Furby was even ordered!) and he reckoned that BP Ultimate was the best to use - and advises diesel users to at least put a couple of tankfuls through pre-MOT to clean the whole installation through.

Yes, its more expensive and yes as Ross says probably purely psycological too!

I always ran the smart on Optimax but fear that might be a bad idea in the Furby...!!

Tesco city or global diesel for me - have tried others but really don't see the gains to justify the extra price and my car doesn't run sooty anyway :D

I guess the difference I felt was down to the cold weather then. I'll probably stick to Shell as it's just as cheap as the supermarket stuff!

I only use Shell diesel in the Superb now. Its a much smoother running fuel, and with Millers added is very clan on the exhaust.

I would not ever touch supermarket fuel ,its tol inconsistant and contaminated.

I have to fill the Transporter up every 4 days with 80 litres of Derv, and the only times I have had "bad fuel" (ie rough running, excessive smoke poor performance) has been after filling up at a supermarket. For the van I tend to stick to Esso as its more available and the forecourt price is usually very keen. However, the Shell stuff is definatley smoother.

Thanks! I don't feel so foolish now! I used to feel a difference in power and smoothness with petrol, this is my first diesel so wasn't sure whether the same applies...

My Merc 709D get's whatever is cheapest , and it doesn't make a bit of difference to it ...............65 MPH max downhill is all it will achieve .

Kentish , re the supermarket fuel .........why do you think it's all contaminated ?...........These days supermarket fuel is very big business .............you do your shopping and fill up at the same time :D ..............so it doesn't hang around long in underground tanks , like some of the dearer independant garages .

I'm sorry , but I think that fuel is mainly bought on price these days ................and let's face it , it all comes from one of the major refineries .

I'd concur...they're going to have to run the forecourt to the same regulations as every other forecourt!

Where would the contamination come from? Considering that from the gantries to the pump, there isn't any exposure to anything that it wouldn't be exposed to at any other filling station?

There was a problem with one of the major supermarkets which had contaminated diesel tanks, however I think this was a filling station related thing rather than a fuel problem.

I only use supermarket fuel and have had no problems at all with performance and economy.

I used a mix between BP Ultra and Sumpermarkets own stuff. BP Ultra every 2-3 tanks just to keep everything clean. I have notice the car runs smoother on BP but seem to get less MPG, maybe it's just in my head?

Most of the fuel comes out of very few refinerys, the different customers ( Shell, BP, etc ) have different specs that the Refinerys blend too. Shell and BP advanced fuels are just an additive after the blending process, dosed at the Road car filing point. Better running a standard grade diesel using unicat 4 or the likes.

Best? In what way?

For a giggle try 50 litres of Shell Diesel Extra and 5 litres of Optimax. Rocket fuel! :D

All comes from the same place :) however you can never have a perfectly sealed environment so there will be some cack in there

So there's cack in a supermarket supply or an independent filling station supply. So surely, the best one to use is the one with the greatest number of customers? ;)

With the amount of diesel I go through, and through the years of diesel driving, using supermarket fuel is only a last choice only thing. If you choose to believe it to be the same stuff then fine.(I take it that Shell is the same as BP and vice-versa).

Sorry, but feel and visible emissions tell me that branded fuel is better than supermarket stuff...and nothing you can say will alter that.

I keep hearing this.... dont tempt me!

has anybody tried this recently? does bp ultimate still get the vote?

Am running my second tank of Shell Diesel Extra at the moment. Car performance and economy is identical to the cheaper Tesco diesel I usually get, plus I lose out on Clubcard points :D

Always looking for a keen price BUT unless its Shell or Texaco (best additive packages, equivalent to a dose of Millers, per Honest John) I always dose with Millers. Have used Millers since 1992. Not had any MOT smoke test problems.

Hi, Does anyone know the cetane rating of the various diesel fuels mentioned above.

I was considering adding a cetane booster but there is no point if the fuel already has a high cetane rating.

Cheers
