A 1.4 16 valve is a petrol engine right?

Could get simular to that in mine on a run, just watch that plumet around towns. Must be fustrating going from your car to one with around 93lb/ft torque!

How come it's idling so low?

I did wonder if 500rpm was the normal 1.4 idling speed? It's idling steady there and I just assumed that was normal?

Mine was around 800 - 1,100 without aircon depending upon the temperature. Air-con on (not that it worked) raised it ~200-300 over the air-con off idle.

Not that the speeds off two cars are really a sample to base it on though.

Mine idles at ~900 rpm. Mostly steady when it isn't surging or otherwise misbehaving. I normally get >50 mpg according to the trip computer on any run more than 15 miles although I do drive carefully and I reckon the trip computer is optimistic by ~4 mpg. I can get 55 mpg according to the trip computer if I really try on a longer run.

Thats really rather good mpg - nice one :)

Low idle could be rev counter fault?Could be worth plugging in to vag-com and using measuring blocks to see what it says the idle revs are.

the 16v engines should idle at around 800rpm normally when they are upto temp

I did 300 miles in 5 hours driving in one, 60 mph average speed and the computer was showing 48.5 mpg. I can see the confusion in so much that they can sound like diesel when cold.

When I bought mine I was initially wondering if the dealer had made a mistake and advertised the car as a petrol when it should have been diesel until I saw the sticker in the fuel flap. The engine also got quietier when it warmed up.

I had a 2002 SEAT Leon 1.4 16v which I thought the Fabia would have had the same engine until I noticed that the Fabia had a DIS unit and seperate HT leads wheras the Leon's had a coil pack on each plug and no HT leads. Apparently the version of the 1.4 16v they put in the Fabia was an older generation engine from the 90's Polo/Ibiza/Arosa/Lupo.

On topic. When driving at a steady 40mph I can get between 46 and 58 mpg showing on the display. Also about 46mpg on motorway at 70mph. Around town is about 34-40mpg.

Strangely though. I did get a 214mpg reading today

Also. When I'm using Unleaded mine idles at 800rpm but on Autogas/LPG its between 400 and 700rpm with the autogas sounding as if its running on 3 cylinders at times.

I suppose once they've eaten through their piston rings the 16v engine becomes an oil burner like its diesel brethren. :giggle:
