Is it my turbo

Featured Replies

New to the site, so bear with me. I have an octavia 1.9tdi, 06 plate with 79,000 miles on the clock, it's a taxi. Car is losing power when accelerating and there is also smoke coming from the exhaust. I've had someone look at it and they said its my turbo. Would I be better with a brand new turbo or a reconditioned one? I'm hoping to have the car for another year. Wat is the cost likely to be and does someone know of any good sites on the internet as to where i could purchase one? Any help much appreciated

is it black smoke if so i would try a air flow meter

new turbo for vrs i got a spanker, 450quid +vat.

reconned ones were 350+vat plus my old one part ex.

i went brand new. i know its not a tdi but still, guidance nevertheless

is this a 90 or 110 tdi? Is the power loss constant or intermittant?

And as already mentioned what colour is the smoke?

Its a 110 tdi, the power loss is constant and the smoke is black

Have you had the car checked for error codes? Well worth doing it before getting a new turbo.

Black smoke does suggest MAF rather than turbo and would be a lot cheaper to change. Black smoke is unburnt fuel, I would have thought it would be more blue if it was the seals in the turbo.

Or it could be a boost leak meaning the engine isn't getting enough air. You could have a hole in a pipe somewhere,

Yeah - definitely don't assume the turbo's gone without doing some sort of diagnostics first (electronic or otherwise!) Try adding dodgy vacuum hoses / valve to the list, and sticky turbo vanes if the 110bhp version has a VNT (think it might not, though...)

MAF can usually be pinpointed by seeing if unplugging it makes any difference (look for it sticking out of the air ducting between the filter and the turbo). And depending where the boost hose has come off, you may be able to see it by looking around the engine bay with a torch - likewise for the vacuum hoses. As for the vacuum valve, if you can't find a member near you with VAG-COM, a copy of the unregistered version + a lead off Ebay and/or a handheld scanner from somewhere like Gendan will at least give you some pointers.

HTH :)

Car has been picked up this afternoon, ive asked the guy to check the turbo and see if it is anything else. It's definately been back smoke, no blue at all. I've passed on all comments to him so thanks everyone for their help.
