Yeah, if I understand ECE R90 correctly, the pads would need to be +/-15% of the OEM spec for friction and disc wear or something like that i.e. if they are 20% better then they are not R90 compliant. Sounds daft to me but there you go.

According to the magazine article on the DS2500 and EBC Reds (linked to in another thread) both of these pads have exactly the same fictional coefficient, u, (mu) - 0.50. I think the standard pads are about 0.45. I doubt its the frictional coefficient that is preventing R-90 approval. Must be something else.

PS - if you managed to carbonise the copper grease you must have got up to some serious temperatures. That seems a crazy way to bed in pads. If my have actually damaged the pad surface. I would run them a good while until you are onto virgin material and see how it goes then.

Thanks Hauptman, I couldn't believe what I was seeing myself but those things were smoking away when I got back and the red caliper pain was a darker red due to the heat!. I will certainly give it a bit longer to see if things improve as your theory makes sense. I read the Italian article which was a big reason for going for the EBC Reds and, although never having tried the DS2500s myself, I would be surprised if mine were operating at anything near the same frictional coefficient at the moment.

I have to say my reds were fine after bedding them in that way, so I'm a bit surprised. I guess I did give it a bit of distance between braking sessions, but nothing too much.

I did notice my red's seem to go off a bit, but a bit of `heavy use` of the brakes on a clear road now has them biting as well as before.

Regarding the comments on the EBC yellow, there are two yellow stuff compounds, so which of these were you running?

I don't know, I've just done a quick google and can't see reference to two different pads and it was 2 years ago, I'm afraid I've slept since then!

Sorry guys but the fact that a pad was not great around the Nurburgring does not make it bad.

Tarox - IMHO an excellent fast road pad. Their G40 disks are the mutts as well.

If you want pads that survive 14miles in the Eifel mountains then perhaps you really should look to something that wouldn't necessarily be very nice to use on the road anyway..............
