Transmission Slap

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have aproblem with my 55 plate 104k Fabia auto.

When driven badly (frequently happens I do driver training for qualified drivers!) the late brakers who then accelerate hard are starting to cause a really horrible slap - huge thump as the power comes in.

1 mechanic thinks its an engine mounting another gearbox seals.

Ok so heres the question

Has anyone else had the problem if so what is it?

And if it is the auto box does anybody know where I can get another really cheap - the cars not worth much now but the electronic controls, extra pedals and hand controls fitted for disabled people are worth a fortune and can't be transferred by law!

104k - When was the ATF last changed? I'll have £5 on never, despite ZF Transmissions recommending every 50_000. And reckon there's a fair chance that will clear your problem up.

Thanks Ken,

As it happens I give the garage a hard time and if anything they over maintain the vehicle, so the ATF has been changed and its level checked 2,000 miles ago. It has to be said that whenever they change the fluid they have to drop the pan off the box because it is supposed to be sealed for life, personally I don't belive that an oil, no matter how good can cope with 100 + k. So we have to ask what the life of the transmission is supposed to be?

It would also explain the numebr of these cars with 120k ish on the clock.

Thanks again

Any time; the oil change is a good place to start because it's fairly cheap and often works, but clearly not this time.

It could also still be engine shunt. Can you induce it by accelerating full bore in second, and really jumping on the brakes (not with someone behind you obviously)?

If not, then I'm afraid we are running out of cheap options.

Hi Ken,

It actually occours the other way round - lose speed, say on approach to roundabout, and then hit the accelerator, the quicker you are off the brake and onto the gas the bigger the thud. Regrettably the candidates I get to train have all been involved in crashes or nicked for speeding and usually do both the gas and brake as well as the brake and gas thing but never with any form of finesse. Its only the brake then gas that induces it.

From what you say it's not looking good?

Cheers QED

My octavia, albeit a manual would thud rather harsly whilst going onto the over run.

I found it to be the upper gearbox mount had collapsed, down to incorrect fitment or movement after the gearbox was refurbished at 117k.

Hi Browny,

I have considered an engine mount, there does seem a lot of movement under there but I shook a Roomster engine the other day and that seemed just as lose. I guess for the cost of new mountings compared to a transmission rebuild it will be worth having a go and seeing what happens.

Take a look at the anti-pendulum link that ties the rear of the gearbox to the subframe.

Also known as the anti-torque link, this part stops the engine rotating when you accelerate or decelerate and can give the symptoms you describe when it is damaged/broken.

That sounds interesting. I seenm to remember the Austin 1100 had a simmilar idea on the top of the engine. Out with the Ramps then! Cheers
