Some advice

Featured Replies

Been fiddling with the wifes car today, changing the rocker gasket,

I broke a stud which holds the cover in place

I have driven it since, but whats the worse that can happen

It now has a little exhaust thing happening out of the hole, but seems too run better imo.

The car is only worth about a tenner so not bothered if it explodes tbh

spot of sealant over the hole perhaps?

Get SWMBO a new car

Get SWMBO a new car

That is the plan lol

Been waiting for it too go bang or fail an MOT but it refuses too die.

I don't see the point in buying her one until this pops. as shes not bothered driving it, and its cheap too run etc

Rocker cover gasket, well if you've cracked a bolt or similar such that it's at all lose, you'll get a slight oil leak from it.

If you've just snapped something off, then just put some 2 part, dry/wet conditions oil proof epoxy putty in the hole.

And if anyone has a plan for me removing the stufd left in the head let me know :):)

You got a close up, I'm trying to work out exactly what it's holding down. Is it just a thread to allow you to screw the rocker cover down?

If it just holds the cover down, then you're going to get oil leaks where the gasket isn't all that tight, but if you top it up and don't mind that and want the car to die then hey.

I think you'd have to drill it out unless you can get a thread extractor. Basically a screw that goes in to it with a reversed thread. That way as you then start to do it up, it will eventually start to turn the remaining thread in an undo direction.

The ultimate badge it solution for me would be a bit of something in there to hold the cover in place and if needed then get some liquid gasket to (Loctite stuff) and seal the rocker with that.

That assumes you're not too fussed with getting if off again mind.

Gave it a run after the slip up and it's runs better like this than it has in years lol

No big flat spots now ???

As previously mentioned in more detail ,the correct repair ,is to drill a hole through the broken stud, about 3 mm ( not so large as to damage the thread of the broken stud). The hardest part is getting the drill to start in the centre of the stud. Then use an extractor tool which has a anticlockwise coarse tapered thread. By turning this anticlockwise it should grip the broken stud, and remove it. It sounds involved, but its a permanent repair ,trying glue, etc to repair it is a bodge!

In that case, wack some gaffer tape over the hole and see what happens and if it works to stop the exhaust thing. If so then give an extractor a go :)
