vRS boost leak?

Featured Replies

I've recently had the belt and water pump changed on my '05 vRS (65k miles). The MPG and performance isn't as good as it used to be, and since I could also hear the turbo more clearly, I lifted up the bonnet and have found the hose from the turbo to the intercooler is now leaking: I can hear an audible hiss when I blip the throttle, and I can feel a jet of air around it.

This is the section of hose that's temporarily removed to change the belt so it looks like the garage's fault. My question is: even though the hose isn't completely detached, could this explain the economy/performance issues? Or is the leak relatively minor in the grand scheme of things: I don't know what the throughput of air is in forced induction, so I can't guess what fraction I'm losing...

Thanks for the help!

Ben

It could have the affects you describe, Is it just not sealing properly, they are fairly easy to pop off and re-seat?

It could indeed explain loss of economy/performance issues. It would also explain any surging or unusual black smoke issues you've got.

There's certainly have more smoke than usual from the PD unit - even under "normal" acceleration. Made me feel a little guilty when I overtook a Prius :D

Hmmm - looks like there's NO o-ring on the joint. There looks to be a seat for one, but no actual ring. This could explain why there's something of a leak.

Looks like the garage lost it - let's hope it's not in bits in the intercooler.

I have just ordered the complete set of boost seals and clips from Skoda, the one I think you are on about is about £1

How much does the full set cost? Ideally I'm going to hunt for just the missing o-ring. You don't happen to have a part number for that do you...? :)

I'd have to check when I got home but the full boost pipe set was around £30

Thanks! Garage have agreed to have a look, but said it would take "a couple of hours". Not sure what they find so time consuming about (i) lifting the bonnet and (ii) undoing the hose clip and (iii) seeing the o-ring isn't there... so may just do it myself, and avoid having them make mistake #'4.

DID YOU MANAGE TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM? MY 06 25K FABIA VRS MAKES A STRANGE (AS TO DESCRIBE DEEP EXHALLING/INHALLING) NOISE AS IT BOOSTS UNDER LOAD. ITS UNDER DEALERSHIP WARRENTRY AND THEY WILL TAKE A LOOK BUT I WONDERED IF I GOT A SIMILAR PROBLEM.

MIKE

PS SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS LOCK.

I assume theres no leak from the short 90 degree lower pipe? Ive juts replaced mine and it was £96!!! :o

there is oil that seams to have been spraying out from the pipe going to the intercooler that you can see when looking under the car through the gab in the under belly plate. could this be where the problem has orginated?

I've got this problem as well. It didn't take 2 hours to find out and I'm not even a mechanic. One of the boost pipes had a massive leak and after replacement another leak turned up as well. Mine were both on the inside and outside corner of the elbow directly onto the turbo.

My question is, has anyone got a solution or custom modification to stop this happening? I'm currently looking to see if metal elbow pipework is available.

Did you manage to find another fix for this problem?
