Starting Problem

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I really think my fabia is on its last legs. Its 01 1.4mpi 8V, the old skoda lump. Tried starting it this morning and the starter turns but nothing. Tried a push start but to no avail as well. When i try starting with the key there seems to be no compression at all except maybe in one cylinder. I have a little knowledge of cars but I would think its maybe the cam chain which had been rattling a bit for the last month or the head gasket (it may not be this however as the coolant level is normal so it hasnt mixed with the oil.) What do you guys think? If the cam chain is ****ed is that the engine ****ed to?

Haven't these got an Electric Fuel Pump which initializes when the Drivers door is unlocked & then opened .... Can you hear it Buzzing when you do this ...

I suppose you really need to do some investigation.

If you suspect the Canm chain, I would of thought that there would be some Horrendous engine noises whilst it was cranking & trying to pull the chain around..

If these are an Overhead Camshaft, You could whip the Rocker cover off to look ...

Though i would be checking the basics first if no Horrible Noises are being heard ...

, Like DO you have a Spark ? & are you getting Fuel delivered ?? Immobiliser ??

Hi Dean thanks for your reply. Im not sure about the Electronic Fuel Pump, although i do always hear a buzzing sound when the key is put to the on position, that me be it. The only reason i suspect the cam chain is because it was rattling for the last while. Your right im sure there would be some bad noises it was broken so my apologies there. What if it was loose? Would the timing be off? I am no expert in mechanics so apologies if i am talking ****e.

I am in way over my head with this so im gonna tow it to the local mechanic. I will post his findings later.

Hi guys, After a bit of a look from my mechanic he found that the valves are stuck open. Not sure why this is. He said however to investigate/solve/fix this problem would cost mega bucks. The engine has 132,000 miles on it so cant really complain about scrapping it as an option i suppose. Have sourced a skoda engine from a 02 fabia for 300 euros and he said this would be a cheaper solution. My furby will live to fight another day
