Which tyre pressure to use?

Featured Replies

I've recently bought 4 Vredestein ULTRAC SESSANTA tyres for my 56 Petrol VRS.

Skoda recommend 1.9/2.1 Bar for the tyres where on the Vredestein website they recommend 3.1/3.5 Bar for the tyres. What would you go with?

Holy Cow!!

3.1bar is 44.95 psi!!

3.5 is 50.75psi!!

I reckon you'd know about every single spec of dirt on the road withy nearly 51psi in a tyre!! Skoda's pressures are generally regarded as too low. I run 34psi on my Vredestein Ultrac Sessenta' 225/40/18's and it seems appropriate to me for normal loading.

This has been debated before - do a search to see if you can find it. For the record, I run 34 at the rear and 32 at the front on my vRS.

and it has the Michelin's that Skoda put on when they're new.

Skoda's recommendation may be too low, but Vredstein's is way too high I think. I'd start with the Skoda figures or maybe 2PSI over all round, and adjust in similar increments when/if edge (both edges, not outer edge scrub from hard cornering) or centre wear starts showing up.

Only skoda know what tyre pressures the suspension was designed in mind with, not the tyre manufacturer, unless its a model specific tyre

I'd suggest if you stray much away from whats recommended you'll get some nasty wear characteristics that will significantly shorten tyre life

i've always wondered too .... i have a set of pirelli p6000's on 15" steel wheels and my pd105 classic always feels very heavy on the front. looking at the sidewalls the tyres look under-inflated ... would anyone recommend i put an extra couple of psi in ?

also ... if i drove the car from my house ... slowly... for 2 miles to my nearest garage, would the tyres still be considered cold enough to get a decently accurate reading ?

They look 'flat' because once you're doing 70mph on a motorway and they have a bit of heat in them they're then at the correct pressure.

If you over or under inflate them you'll either wear out the centre of the tread or the shoulders

The Skoda figures are way too low. i tried the factory figures when I had the factory fit 17's and you could actually feel the tyre squirming. You are at risk of damage to the rims if you run at the handbook figures.

OK

Apologies for semi-hijacking this thread.

I was driving up the M1 at the weekend with 4 people in the car. 20 mins into the journey and the tyre pressure warning light came on, at the same time triggering the ESP to switch off. I've checked all tyres and the pressures are fine 34 all round, however I cannot reset the warning light or turn the ESP back on. Any ideas?

Many thanks,

The only thing I can suggest is to get your car scanned for fault codes. That will tell you exactly what is wrong.

I agree that Skoda pressures are too low. I have just put on Michelin Pilot Sport 3's and the Michelin dealer advised that what was common nowadays was to take the max pressure of the tyre, knock 10% off and inflate to that as a base point and decide what you like best.

Im currently running at around 42 psi in all 4 wheels and the car handles loads better and is quieter. I have done about 5000 miles now since changing the tyres and as of yet there does not seem to be any weird wear patterns developing. We'll see!

i took the pressures on my p6000 up by 2psi and there is definitely an improvement in both the ride and handling of the car. turn in is crisper (less wallow), bump absorption seems a little better and a bit less road noise. My Ceeeeeeeeeed has tyre pressures of 32 psi and it's a much lighter car so it seems illogical that a big heavy motor like the octavia would work well at such low tyre pressures.

42 is very high IMHO........

My tyre pressure warning light came on for no reason over the weekend and would not reset (turn off) after I checked the tyres. Instinct told me to hold the reset button while I switched the ignition on and hey presto it worked.
