vRS decat options...

Featured Replies

Evening all :)

I have read a few topics on this subject and it seems peoples opinions on modifying the vRS exhaust vary greatly..

The cheapest (and thus the most temping :p) mod is to simply replace the cat with a bit of pipe (2" is it?) and keep the standard backbox. (which my uncle did on his new le vrs a while back AFTER he had it remapped and he said it definitely felt quicker - but didn't keep it long so don't know about reliability...)

The next would be to get a "cat back" system from the likes of Milltek - which includes a backbox OR alternatively to get a sports cat - but I think they are more for petrol engines as diesels don't need the cat to pass mots?

Now I have heard of improvements such as the turbo spooling up quick thus reducing lag.. also read that minor power gains can be had (especially on a remapped car with other breather mods etc) - and also a nice sound

But I have also heard that it can make the turbo "over-spool" which can make them fail in some cases. This particularly worries me as my car has done over 130,000 miles and I don't want to bust the turbo as it really is running well atm. :)

What is the safest way to go? :S

P.S am I right in thinking my car (05) has a kkk(?) turbo? or does it have the garrett?

Any input is very much appreciated :)

Get your local exhaust place to chop out your cat, weld on some flanges as well as making a straight through pipe for you. Then you can put the cat back in if you want to B)

(or DIY if you have the know-how and materials)

IIRC 2005 plate will have the KKK

I'm on 133500 miles. Remapped for +/- 100k and decatted (after re-map) for around 50k. It sounds great B) :p

Awesome - thanks for the info mate :)

So you have no fears of turbo over-spooling etc? :)

P.S what do you mean by flanges? will a straight pipe of the same width as the cat piping not bolt (weld) straight on?

I have a full custom exhaust and de cat on my Fabia VRS and love it. I've no boxes at all aswell it's just 2 3/4 inch pipe from turbo to a 3 inch oval tail pipe

Been De catted now for 7k and as much as it's not many miles it's had no problems and it does feel quicker since getting it done. I do reccomend it tbh

If you search through my previous posts i'm sure theirs a video there somewhere

Ok thanks for the info :)

That reminds me of another question I have:

Should I also ditch the back box and just have one long pipe put in to where the cat and backbox would have been? I have heard that the vRS backbox is also restrictive. Also I don't want to have the turbo over-spooling from complete loss of back pressure  :S

You take your chances with the overspooling, TBH I'm pleased having got 130k+ miles out of a standard turbo with a remap if it goes pop, it goes pop.

hmm this is what worries me tbh...

Ive just got the car I don't want to fork out £1000 for a new turbo because I go and mess with the exhaust :S

TY for flanges heads-up :)

reckon most exhaust places would have them in or did u need to get em specially?

Also... Will the turbo over-spool even if you get the proper milltek cat back system that is designed for the car?

My exhaust place had the flanges in stock mate so i'd imagine it'd be the same everywhere

OK thanks buddy :)

I'll prolly ask before I book her in any way - just to be safe. (if I go down this route ;) )

Yeh best to be safe than sorry buddy

Aye  but the the thing is I'm unsure whether its "safe" to mod the exhaust at all on my car... :(

i'm gonna be naughty but if this doesn't make u wanna do it i dunno what will

Pics and video at the bottom, not very good cos i didn't know the road was just random but gives u an idea of the kinda noise. It's addictive i love it for a Diesel exhaust, but i think i need a bigger tail pipe

Mines has death on a daily basis, had it for 7 months mapped for 4 and de catted for 3 and turbo's been fine

My turbo's only covered 49k though

Not to sure what kinna life my turbo has had (not had car long) all I know is its running well now  pulls like a train B)

I don't do that many miles really and always let it get nice and warm before giving it any boot and letting it cool on idle for a few mins after a brisk run.

See this is where i always get slated but in no way am i saying do it but i give my car death from it's first start till i turn it off again at night. Do around 2 - 3k miles a month and *touch wood* it's been perfect. Had 3 problems with the car since i got it first being a coolant pipe getting lodged under my BMC and melting through causing a coolant leak which then created problem 2 as it got into my MAF killing it. Then last month my starter motor went randomly

Other than that nearly 20k of trouble free motoring and as i said it's had a hard life in that 20k and never misses a beat. Run purely on shell Diesel and just had a service and brake fluid change :)

It's all in how you maintain a car imo

Indeed. :)

But you really shouldn't give your car "death" before it is warmed up :giggle:  no wonder you got slated for that  :(

I try to wait till the temp has been normal for a little while as I believe the oil takes slightly longer to heat up - or maybe that's just petrols...

Well i've had 8 cars now and don exactly the same with all of them and never once had any problems with them, i've covered some serious mileage between all 8 lol

But i want a Mk2 Focus RS next if i get that it'll be heated up properly and be treated like a baby, my Fabia is just a cheap runaround that i said i wasn't gonna mod haha

Does anyone know the answer to my previous question?... - Will the turbo over-spool even if you get the proper milltek cat back system that is designed for the car?

People have been through 3+ turbos on unmodded vRS's. As long as you let it warm up and cool down there shouldn't be any problems.

Its the same as people with remaps and clutches. If it slips it slips.

If you're worried about overspool then leave the cat in, or go for a sports cat if you want. Then go ahead with an aftermarket system from BlueFlame/Milltek etc, from the cat backwards.

Steve

Usually if the turbos gonna overspool it'll go into limp mode to stop it blowing

Had mines go into limp mode several times even before the de cat
