driveshafts - same on mk1 and mk2 felicia 1.3mpi?

Featured Replies

Looks like i need to change the outer cv joint on the nearside of my chariot. Theres a mk1 in my local yard with only 52k on clock, could i harvest the shafts from that for my mk2? money is tight at the mo and im needing a balljoint/wishbone as well....dont suppose theyre the same too? can get most of the car for £50 lol

They're the same, but I'd never bother with s/h parts like wishbones, they're cheap enough. And if it's just the outer CV then remember you'll need to drain and replace the gearbox oil unless you're super-quick with the changeover and have the car on a severe angle...

good news then. The wishbones for mine apparently have holes for anti roll bar bushes, but i dont appear to have an anti roll bar....does that mean the older mk1 ones would fit cos theyre loads cheaper new...

Scratch the wishbone theory  had her up and pryed all the bushes and theres plenty in them yet. Its definitely the driveshaft, a lot more play on the nearside one to the offside, and the knock is evident moving it by hand, so would only be louder when under load. cant make out which end, both the gaitors are fine, so probs best to change the whole thing :wall:

You should be able to hold the shaft itself to find out whether it's the inner or outer joint that's the problem... some play is normal though.

well i had hold of the shaft itself at the time, and the nearside outer joint is considerably louder than the offside one by comparison. Im now starting to doubt myself on this one, just to review the symptom again,

Loud knock can be felt thru the passenger footwell floor. (usually on right hand turn, less so when off the gas)

multiple (2, 3 or 4) knocks from nearside wheel, particularly when turning right, close or on full lock, gas on

Coil spring not fractured, damper in good condition (both fronts replaced in 2007, car has done 20k since!)

no eccessive movement in any of the wishbone mounting bushes when car raised off floor

minimal movement of the strut in the top mount, top strut locknut tight, strut bar also secure

Im gonna need a crack at sorting this at the weekend, any sensible suggestions of a solution more than appreciated! :)

Sounds like the joint, from what you've said. Given that you can get most of the car for £50, sounds the way to go....get all the "usual" bits, you'll not spend anything on it again....

^^ what he said, all felicia driveshafts are the same... doesn't matter if it's a 1300, or a 1.6 or a diesel model, they all have the same driveshafts

re the same driveshafts. Well I needed to fit a new boot as there was a split and it's MOT time. I took the shaft off and knocked off outer joint, but I held the shaft ( vertically) in my new 3 ton vice- and bent it!

So off to scappy for a shaft, £30 with joints. They looked old so i thought I would swop my newer joints to old shaft.

Not so fast. on the inner joint the splines were different to new and old shafts. My car is 2000- only 51K.

so I had to just repack the old joints and put the new boots on.

This surprised me. But the old joint outer splines fit the gearbox and the hub, so it is ok now.

The bent shaft ceratinly was noticed as the engine rocked on turning the road wheel.

Another lesson learned- hope this is useful to another doing a similar job.

thats all a big help. went to the breakers all tooled up today for a major salvahe mission, and the (insert expletive here) have only gone and weighed the donor in!

Have to wait for at least a week now as off on holidays....

Dont mean to hijack your thread but doe anyone know where i can get a set of custom axles fabricated for my skoda favorit? I'm planning on starting a project but first i need know that i can get the axles made for it.

Anyone?

By axles do you mean driveshafts?

some call it driveshaft, some call it axle..(the thing that connects the cv joints to the gearbox)

this is what im talking about.

ive found a site but i'm not sure this one will work out all that well. so still need your help

Can you tell us more about what you're planning? People may have ideas then!

hardly ever any need for a "custom" shaft no matter what you are building there will be a production one somewhere that works.. takes a bit of time and patience but so much simpler and cheaper when it comes to replacement time..

from my experiance anyway....

oh that reminds me, somewhere i have a book from an aftermarket driveshaft reconditioner that's got all the sizes and dimensions listed.. i'll have to see if i can dig it out :wonder:

You were exactly who I was thinking of, Jim!

Wanted it to be a surprisebut i guess i hav to let the cat out of the bag.. I'm planning to put a Honda B16 with S1 cable gearbox in my skoda favorit.

i think the spline / teeth count on the outer axle for the favorit is 22. the spline count for the S1 gearbox depends on the halfshaft being used. Its either 25 or 26.
