2.0tdi limp mode

Featured Replies

hi...i`ve got a 56 plate 2.0tdi...had a diagnostic test done on it the other day and it was showing 2 faults....fault 1 was the dpf fluid tank needed refilled and fault 2 was the dpf was not functioning properly, probably connected to the lack of dpf fluid in the tank...had a local garage put dpf fluid in the tank and when diagnostic check was re-done fault 1 has been cleared....fault 2 is still present and the car appears to be in limp mode...i`ve tried driving it for 20 miles at high speed in a low gear but due to limp mode it`s nearly impossible to get any speed up...does anyone have any ideas about how i can get the car out of limp mode?...cheers martin

The DPF is clogged which is why you are limp mode. Its possible that its to clogged to clear itself and may need to have a manual regen initiated by a dealer.

cheers for the reply mannyo...any idea what kind of money i might be looking at

not sure really, but the dpf if it needs to be replaced is not cheap.

Has the OP Vag-Com'd the refilled fluid?

iirc you must tell the ecu it's been done, simply clearing error codes isn't enough.

And #2 - the issues with this dpf unit are that the sensor can go bad resulting in a false reading, and should you need a new dpf I think it's in the region of £500 plus fitting, how many lights do you have on the dash, is just the regen light on, or do you have both and the workshop message?

Some diy cure's I've read about are to ram a broom handle through the centre of the dpf so it can't block up, or there is a place that replaces it with a dummy pipe and maps the whole issue away, not cheap though, and you could try a dealer forced regen, but this doesn't always work.

Worst peice of engineering ever on a motor car if you ask me, it effectively strangles the engine once it's blocked up creating excess back pressure, makes the car run rich to remove the build up, resulting in more fuel use and still a shifting of carbon's into the air, or to sum up, it's like someone who puts all their rubbish in a bin, only to walk outside later and dump it on the pavement, can't blame the car maker's, this is idiot MP's and Greenies that have come up with this idea, blame the likes of Arnie the Smogmanator for it with the constant banging on about pollution as he steps out of a V12 Limo to address California

cheers for the reply mate

the dpf light and the management light are both on but there is no dashboard message...how do you tell the ecu that the dpf fluid has been topped up?...shoving a broom handle through the dpf sounds like a great idea...if nothing else it would make me feel a bit better...where do i find the dpf filter to give this a try

I believe the setting for the fluid replenishment is in Vag-Com software.

Read up on the broom handle trick first, it's an expensive mistake if it's an internet folly, although where I read seemed pretty genuine, and if you find it is knackered you've nothing to lose doing it, but I'd try and get a reading from the sensors in it first, these are known to play on Passat's, and also get Skoda to regen for you, if they can't do it then it's a new unit I'm afraid, it should be located down the back of the engine, follow from the turbo ( next to airfilter) and due to space i suspect it will be resident between the engine and bulkhead, easier way might be to take off the engine cover and look behind from the passenger side, should look like a tailpipe box, if it's not at the rear it will be sitting under the turbo, hth.

wintersky can you tell me how many miles your superb has done?...cheers andy

hi...it`s done 91000 miles

are you having a problem with yours?

Hi there wintersky, no touchwood i havent had any issues with my 2.0tdi 6speed manual....and my wife drives our car quite a few times aweek doing fairly local runs and we havent had any dpf issues at all. The only thing i have noticed is the actual regeneration done automatically and one notices an unusual odour...but that only lasts a cppl mins, and that is approximately every 300miles, but in that time as ive mentioned in previous posts on here, we stick to a regime of giving the car a nice cruise on motorway weekly for a good half hr to keep the exhaust hot and clean, and also i get the car serviced every 6,000 miles with the 5w30 longlife oil inc filter and air filter regardless what the maunfacturers recomends.

I know the oil isnt cheap, but i feel its better running on clean oil and breathing thru a clean filter in order to keep the emissions very low. After all, i firmly believe that regular servicing above the maunfacturer specs will give the car long life and trouble free motoring...now i must find some wood and touch it 3 times !! lol
