please help in dilemma over which vrs to buy

Featured Replies

Hi Guys been reading lots on here but im still in a real dilemma over 2 octavia vrs's.

Im really wanting any comments or advice on the buying an older 2006 petrol vrs or a newer diesel vrs.

I do about 6000 miles a year (500 a month on average). I've found a 2006 black petrol vrs for around 7.5k with under 50k on the clock. Ive also found a diesel 2007 vrs with the same mileage on it for 11k.

I do drive my cars hard and enjoy going for a blast with no destination in mind ;-)

My daily commute to work is only about 10 miles in total. Im in a luck position to have an intrest free loan for either car

If im doing my maths right with a heavy ish right foot the petrol my return 25mpg on average there fore:

£7500 over 6 years repayment would be £104 a month

500 miles a month at 25mpg would cost:

500 / 25 = 20

20 * 4.54 ( converts to litres of fuel) = 90.8 litres at 1.20 a litres thats £108.96 in fuel. = total monthly cost is £108.96 + £104 = £212.96

----

Diesel summary is:

£11000 over 6 years repayment would be £152 a month

500 miles a month at 35mpg would cost:

500 / 35 = 14.3

14.3 * 4.54 = ( converts to litres of fuel) = 68.8 litres at 1.22 a litres thats £79 in fuel. = total monthly cost is £152 + £79 = £231

So here is were ive been losing sleep thinking over positives and negatives of both.

thoughts on the petrol are:

- smoother

- cheaper overall monthly cost

- less chance of expensive things to go wrong (ie diesel injectors dpf ect)

- is 1 mile from my house

-1 lady driver

thoughts on the diesel are:

- its a newer car

- still 1 year skoda dealer warrenty

- will hold its value better over 5 years or so

based on that i was for about a hour last night swaying towards the diesel, then i read more and thought about the whole pd engine vs common rail.

As the CR diesel is much quieter and smoother alot of peeps seem to be trading up from there pd to a cr so maybe the pd would depreciate a bit faster that i originally thought.

So i would be spending alot of money (for me) for older technology where as the petrol is tried and tested and still the same engine today ( i think? ).

Also if i had a tight month money wise i could drive the petrol not as hard and save some money on fuel.

With the diesel my monthly payments are higher and i cant really save much money or bring down my total cost per month (load and fuel combined)

The other thing is i am ocd about cleaning my cars and keeping paintwork in perfect condition. The newer diesel is in like new condition and has been well looked after, the petrol has a few scratches so not perfect, although nothing a £300 paint correction couldn't sort out.

Well theres my ramblings ;-) im going to look at the petrol again 2night to maybe put a deposit on it, it was very dirty last time i viewed it and the owner is having it valeted today so tonight i can see how good the paintwork really is.

I think at the moment petrol is the one to go for - any commets / advice, please please please post a reply today to help me decide before tonight.

Many thanks... very much looking forward to owning an ocativa vrs and becoming part of this forum ;-)

no doubt ill be speaking to you all alot more in the future ;-)

The petrol is £3500 cheaper at the end of the day ,i would get that and fork out for a warranty<warranty Direct> to cover you. They will both be worth Peanuts in 5 years time , i think if it was the CR diesel it might put a different slant on it .But have a drive in both, we can give our opinion, but for me heart and mind says petrol , also what colour is the diesel, and have they got similar equipment, that could alter either way too. :thumbup:DSC000482.jpg

Having owned both petrol and PD vRS's I would definitely go for the petrol. Its a nicer drive and feels a more balanced car. The TFSI is a lovely engine with a broad spread of torque and much smoother than the PD. IMHO the only reason to go for a PD version is fuel cost savings - which are not significant with your relatively low annual mileage.

I believe the new VRS petrol engine is different to the 2006. The 2006 was a TFSI and I believe the current engine is a TSI. DO not ask me what the difference between them is but I believe they are different. Hence you will be buying an older engine model in each case. I currently have a 56 PD VRS and picked it over the petrol at the time due to the driving experience. Although the petrol is quicker to 60 and was quiet it was a little souless for me. It did not have the kick my old Mk 1 VRS had. So although it was quicker it did not feel it and to me was a little boring to drive (no smile factor). However, the PD had a massive kick to it which still makes me smile. On our current roads you can do XXXmph etc. but what I want is a smile when I press the accelerator and get a big shove in the back. I have also had no problems with my dpf or injectors in the 3+ years I have had the car. I regularly return 42mpg and I do have a fairly heavy foot (on a long run can get just over 50mpg). My normal driving to work is 10 miles each way in a mixture of B,A and motorway roads so a fair bit of accelerating and slowing down.

I have just order a new CR VRS Estate. I was only able to test drive the DSG so not sure how this translates to manual but it was smoother with less of a kick compared to the PD.

thanks for the replies guys really appreciate it ;-)

I think my heart is in the petrol, i like the shove in the back feeling of the tdi aswell, my previous car was a 2000 plate bmw330d with 128000 miles on it. I've been spoilt by the smooth 6 cylinder diesel though so the vrs tdi feels a bit rough and noisy after that.

Reason i sold the bmw was it being high mileage and and se rather than sport, it was fab in a straight line but not so fun in corners and the 2000 model had overboosted steering (could move the steering wheel and inch either way without the wheels turning!)

So I'm after something more sporty to drive with better road feedback steering wise, octavia vrs fits the bill perfect, love everything about the drive of the car.

Going to hopefully buy the petrol one tonight - wish me luck! ;-)

spec wise the tdi and petrol were both magic black (my fav) and same spec apart from diesel had the maxidot and mp3 where as petrol doesn't

petrol still has parking sensors, jumbox armrest, all elec windows and hid lights.

what would you pay for a 2006, 48000 mile 2 owner with the above spec and 18inch wheels full service history....... anything under 8k a good price ?

hasn't had a cambelt change which skoda tell me should be done every 4 years - so thats a bargaining point along with the scratch on door and slightly curbed alloys

petrol vrs every day!!! Get it bought as it drives much better than the diesel. I work in a Skoda dealership and have access to them all. I ran a diesel vrs as a company car for about 4 months. Ask yourself why I have ordered a petrol vrs for my mrs!!!

Also I find 1st 2nd and 3rd gear in the diesel car on a wet road terrible for wheel spin

;-) ;-) my mind is made - thankyou very much for your valid inputs, im so bloody excited now, gotta try and concentrate on work till tonight ;-)

Do any of you guys have regular meets hampshire way, would be fab to meet a few fellow octavia vrs drivers

did i mention im really excited ;-)

back in 2005 i owned an na toyota supra - that was a fun car, im so looking forward to a fun drivers car again ;-)

A petrol vRS for your needs by the look of it then :)

Well i am in the lucky position that i was able to buy new (probably the first and last time ever because of finances etc) and i had the same dilema do i go for petrol or diesel. i came form a Lexus 220D which i loved it was a really nice car all round bit thirsty for an oil burner but none the less very nice.

I did a lot of thinking over it and went for the petrol VRS in the end i do about 900 miles per month and just liked the thought of petrol really. i have to say that in no way am i dissapointed its a realyl nice car does everything i want and more and even if it is a little more costly in fuel than the diesel i dont care.

The ultimate question is what do you really want as i am sure if your like me and you go against what you want you'll always be wondering what if (think you said your heart goes with the petrol) its cheaper as has been said already and that is a lot of money to "play with"

If nothing else drive them and see what you like best! drive them again if your not sure!

from ym point of view i would say get the petrol you wont regret it

Thanks mate, thats another reassuring post that makes me feel im making the right decision.

I have now driven 3 petrol cars and one pd diesel, although i could happily live with the diesel performance and like the initial pull from low down revs, I have to admit there's that little extra in the petrol on open road acceleration that for me gives you that "lose your stomach feeling" even in a straight line when taking it right round the rev range. I simply cant get in the diesel ;-) hence my heart being in the petrol.

thanks for the input.

Is there anyone that could give me a real life mpg of the petrol in 5 mile inner city commute - without being fuel cautious ?

5 miles urban commute?

Engine won't even get warm. I think you'd be lucky to get much over 20mpg. With a lot of stop starting 17mpg.

Which isn't to say that the TFSI can't be reasonably economical, I got 39mpg on my 15 mile commute the other day.

Remember also TFSI likes super unleaded so factor that cost in. That's one of the changes with the TSI it gets full performance from 95RON.

My personal experience is that supermarket 95RON unleaded is pants and the car runs like a dog on it. Super market super is ok.

Shell ordinary 95RON is almost as good as Vpower or supermarket SU.

Also remember the petrol will cost a bit more to insure and tax but I suppose the derv lump will go through tyres quicker.

Why limit yourself to a VRS, why not look at a 1.8 TSI, it is faster than both of the diesle VRS cars, maybe more understated but could surprise a few people at the lights!

The 0-60 may be slightly quicker but I think the ingear performance of the Diesel VRS will easily beat the 1.8. The 1.8 has 160bhp while the diesel VRS is 170 while the torque of the diesel is in a different league compared to the 1.8. The only reason the 1.6 is quicker to 60 is the fact you need to change to 3rd on the diesel while you can get to 60 in 2nd on the petrol.

it has to be petrol for me mate , i get about 28mpg on a 15 mile route to work and i drive pretty quick.

i bought a 06 black magic petrol vrs with 40k on the clock 6 months ago for 8.5k, and like somebody said it realyy likes running on superunleaded.

Hi All, couldn't view the petrol car I liked last night in the end, his wife had forgotten I was coming to view and had gone out for the evening in the car!!

Anyway second chance, going to try again in my lunch hour today - fingers crossed ;-)

Will post the outcome!

Im SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy ;-)

Just got back to work after doing a fab deal and driving the car away today!

Is a black 2006 petrol vrs with 48k full history, parking sensors, auto climate, 18" wheels, full round elec windows and jumbo armrest!

What a car these octavia vrs's are, cant think of anything more i'd want, love the seats, power, smoothness of a petrol again, lovely little rasp on acceleration

sure ill be posting questions as time goes on and i get to know it ;-)

wwwooooooooooooohooooooo ;-)

Will post pics once shes polished up

 Well done! Hope you enjoy your new toy! :)

Glad you went for the petrol one. Much better car to drive even if it does use more fuel.

Well done, you wont regret your decision, now you need a remap! and also update your profile

Cheers guys ;-) yer im very glad i went with the petrol in the end, need to get a couple of thing sorted - few very light scratches in paintwork, a little ding on lower drivers door and alloy refurb as theres a little bit or curbing on 3 wheels. can anyone recommend a good place to get all that sorted for under £500 in southampton ?

Still getting used to the clutch and having difficulty changing smoothly without a little jerk between changes engaging gear , guess its going to take me a while after being used to the 330d with a 5 speed box ;-)

don't want to be anywhere other than behind the wheel at the moment ;-)

Dont think i'll bother with a remap for a fair while, its more than enough power for me for now ;-)

oh and can anyone recommend a good place price wise to have a cambelt change in southampton, been quoted £370 from freeborn skoada

5 mile urban commute? I guess a bicycle is out of the question or you would have considered it!?

Have fun with the new motor!

Fair enough the diesel may have 10bhp more but is probably heavier. I don't know about the gear changing difference as I have gone for the DSG.

Of course I had other reasons for choosing the 1.8 DSG over the VRS as I was comparing the VRS diesel to the performance and feel of my current 210bhp 2.4 159 Ti diesel. In the end I decided that the smoother quieter petrol engine with DSG would give a more pleasant experience, but I must say that the VRS was definitely exciting to drive.

The wheel specialist is a nationwide co, i had mine done there, £276 , they weren't damaged , just fancied colour change<same price if they were kerbed > Powder coated really good job . Maybe the scratches would polish out on paintwork , a good detailer could help you. Also if the paint is not damaged on door ,a smart repair by someone like Dent_Devils could fix it about £50 cash
