Firstly, sorry to Leeboy for blatantly stealing his pictures, but they are perfect for my quest to find a boost leak somewhere. I've posted before that I have a whistle that's getting louder as the days go by. I need to sort it before something pops or falls off leaving me stranded. I have never seen the engine from this angle, but a lot of you on here have done many times. Could you please tell me which of these pipes could be whistling? As the turbo spools up nd down, the whistle rises and falls in pitch. It isn't the airbox as I have asked the wife to rev the car whilst I listened. It is definitley coming from behind the engine and therefore your advice would be welcome. As it's our only car for getting the family around I'd rather not wait until the car's out of action to sort it out. Also, can these things be checked from above, or does the car need to be off the ground?

On a previous car I had a whistle as you described that was tracked down to the bearings in the turbo. I had the turbo replaced with one I bought second-hand.

Open the window when accelerating and see if the whistle sounds a little mechanical, like a police siren, or is just air escaping as you suggest.

I hope it's not the turbo. If so, I'd be gutted after only 37,000 miles. I guess the cost of a replacement is going to be massive then?

Have you got any members near you (what is your location?) with a Mk1 Octavia VRS who can take you for a drive just to check the sound you are hearing is not just the normal noise the turbo makes?

In the top picture you have posted the turbo is the thing the two large thick black pipes are going into, if either of those pipes aren't secure then you would hear more noise than usual although the chances are if that is happening the car would detect the problem, throw a fault code and go into limp mode.

Nope, as far as I'm aware it's just little old me up here in Scarborough. Having someone close by who's an expert would be great, but I'm having to figure it out for myself with the help of you guys on here. I pm'd Leeboy to apologise for the stolen pics and he's leaning towards it being the turbo too.

If it is the bearings in the turbo, what happens eventually? I need to do a few hundred miles for work before I can even think about finding time to look at the car. Will there be a huge dramatic failing, or will the sound just get worse?

I ran mine with increasing noise for about 2 months before I could get hold of a replacement turbo, but only used it for short journeys around town and few journeys of around 20 miles each.
