aftermarket front speaker installation

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have just upgraded the front speakers in the doors and fitted an amp.

I'm just reading about amp installation a bit more in depth out of curiosity and have come across an article about speakers being in and out of phase with each other.

I recall the wires being blue and brown and wondering which were positive and negative. I cant remember which way i did wire them now but does anyone know which is which?

before anyone tries to state the obvious, there was no markings on the cables stating + or -

:)

I'd appreciate any comments.

Thanks

As long as they both connect to the same polarity at the speaker AND amp end, the colour is irrelevant.

Thanks for the post okenobi.

Yep i am fully aware of that fact, i wont go into it but the way i wired them isn't straight forward (first time installation and i went full retard on it) and to check them in the way you suggested id need to take the carpet up again on both sides... lol

Anyway, this information could be helpful for anyone replacing speakers in there car, who dont have them amped and just want to 'plug and play'.

there is a way of testing a speaker by using a AA battery, ask yr local car audio specialist

To do this you need to be able to see the speakers. Assuming say you have a red and a brown lead, connect them to the battery and the speaker drive unit will move in or out and stay there, Swap as necessary to make it move out, then mark the leads + and - as indicated on the battery. Now connect the other channel, does the speaker move the same way as the other side? If not swap the leads over then mark the + and - again. It actually doesn't really matter which way round the + and - are as long as both sides are the same. You are now in phase.

You will know if the speakers are out of phase by the lack of bass, and when you're directly between them they make your ears go funny! Serious.

All you will need to do to rectify things is swap the +ve and - ve round for one speaker, either at the amp end or the speaker end

BLUE/WHITE = +

BROWN/WHITE = -

You should never go FULL retard...
