Wirless router P*&sing me off keeps dropping out

Featured Replies

I have a TP Link Router which worked well with PC`s hard wired to it but its wireless kept dropping all the time and the speed was dreadfull so i exchanged it for a newer one this time it was still TP Link but the newer model with the model no: TD-W8960N with 300 Mbps speed and this is the same.

The computers that are connected by wire work really well its the wireless side my wife has a laptop running XP Home I have even changed the wireless adaptor on the laptop to a 300 Mbps one by the same manufacturer but still the same. The net is very very slow even though the signal strength is showing 3 bars then it will just all of a sudden drop out and have to reconnect again.

I thought maybe its the laptop but my sister in laws with windows 7 is the same when she brings it round here, even when the laptop is near the router it still drops out. The laptop is showing just 3 bars for our router but yet picks up the full 5 for next doors talk talk which is very frustrating.

I have tried playing with the router settings and have changed the wireless channel to no 5 with no difference then to no7 again still the same. we do have a cordless digital phone base near the router and thought this may be causing the problem so looked up its frequency and it isnt using the 2.4 GHZ that routers use.

Just wondering what else i can do as i am certain its not the laptop/wireless adaptor side of things as it can see next doors wireless router at full strength and also my sister in laws newer laptop is acting the same. I just dont know what to check next to try and get this sorted.

One thing i have noticed is when the wirless adaptor is not connected on the laptop it sees our wireless wouter at 5 bars (full strength) but once its connected it drops to 3 or even 2 bars.

Very annoying but hope some of you guys may be able to help - cheers.

Try doing a scan to see what wireless channels are vacant + away from the strong ones and try setting it up on one of those.

Have you ensured that it's running the latest firmware? The latest version was released in January here

How do you do a scan to see what wireless channels are vacant? I will look at the firmware also. Cheers

As I don't have a wireless computer I'm afraid I can't help with the PC side of things but I'm sure someone will be along with that answer shortly!

I normally use an app on my phone which shows channel in use and their strengths so I can decide which one to set the router on for non 3g connectivity. I did alter it initially but have left it static for ages as I've had no problems.

It's been a while since I used it but,

This will let you see what going on around you and iirc it has a signal meter so you can wander round the house and find your deadspots

HTH

Change the frequency

Also wireless is one of those things that other none computer related items can screw the signal up

If your capable some routers have a crack for the firm where which will put the signal to full strength and knock out surrounding wirless signals

(illegal but doable with some devices)

Check if you have a radiator / microwave etc near by... things like this can cause issues with wirless setups

Also look out for cordless phones, wireless a/v senders, anything that broadcasts. My cordless phone base station murders my wireless network if it's put near the router.

We have ours near to the router, How far away do you position your base unit from the router?

I used that netstumbler program whilst moving around the house with the laptop and it seems to disconnect when there is another active access point then when there are no active access points the wireless connection stays on.

I have changed the channels on the router to 3, 5, and 7 but still get the same symptoms, should I try hiding my router name so it cant be seen.

cheers.

It used to work Ok about a meter away -but they're now in different rooms on different floors :)

That won't make any difference whatsoever as it'll still be transmitting.

Does netstumbler show channels that are vacant or not very strong? If so, use one of those.

Well this is interesting...I couldnt get the TP Link router to stop dropping out and in the settings the channels only went to 9, so i thought i would re-connect my Lynsys router (model WAG54G2) and this has worked for the last few hours on the laptop without fault no matter where in the house it goes.

The only thing i have noticed is that the Linksys routers wireless channels go upto 13 but the TP link only went to 9 its set to 12 on the Linksys and all is ok.

I have set up the same wpa2 settings etc but the only thing is the Linksys is a 54Mbps router where the TP link one was a 300 Mbps router, but to be honest havent seen much difference in speed.

On the laptop though that is still using the TP Link usb adaptor which is running at 300 Mbps.
