Paintwork damage

Featured Replies

Just been out to clean the Unpronouncable Volcano Dust off my 59 Elegance and on the rear passenger side door I found this:

Paint+damage.jpg

At first glance it looks like water marks, but when you look closer, it seems that the topcoat is bubbling and some of the smaller ones are darker and look almost like rust spots.

I wash it using Meguiar's NXT wash and wax with Collinite 476 so nothing unusual. It's not stone chips as they run in near vertical lines in only one area (front edge, above trim strip). Needless to say off to the dealers tomorrow for an inspection for warranty fix. Never had that before on a 7-month old car before.

Anyone ever seen it before?

hello darren i am a paint sprayer and id say that is micro blistering its possible the panel has been refinished

the base coat on cars is water based paint if the base isnt fully dried before the clear coat is applied the water remains trapped and will blister like that

it can take months for the blisters to surface

Can u borrow a paint depth guage, that would prove its been sprayed.

Is the car not covered with a paint warranty?

Its a 59-plate.I would have that back to the dealer and let them look at it.

From the warranty document

Three-year Paint Warranty

All Škoda passenger cars are provided with a warranty for a period of three years from the date of first registration against any manufacturing defects with the paintwork. The only preconditions are:

• The defect must be reported to a member of the Škoda authorised network as soon as it is discovered. This must, of course, be within the warranty period

• The defect must not be due to external influences such as accident damage, climatic, thermal, chemical or industrial pollution, insufficient care or maintenance. This will be determined by a member of the Škoda authorised network at the time of inspection.

Looks covered to me

@M0bov. No, I haven't

@fletch1976. Thanks. That's what I was thinking, but nowhere near as technical as you put it.

Update.

Been to dealer and they are referring it to SUK.

Their initial 'diagnosis' was "something has dripped on to it..." Needless to say I disagreed.

We'll see what SUK come back with.

If they don't come back, then get a report from a bodyshop and reject the vehicle including a copy of this report.

You can also state that you did give them a chance to rectify it under warranty, which they declined and as such you have no faith in them diagnosing and fixing the problem correctly.

Also, when at the dealer, there's a couple of lines on the front passenger door too.

If it was something acidic, how come it didn't damage the plastic trim or anything else?

it definitely looks like the paint has blistered from underneath to me

did you buy the car brand new if so SUK will know if the car was damaged in transit and if the panels were refinished before you received it

I've seen something similar on my car. I think what happened was someone had lobbed a bottle of coke out of the window of a passing car and it had splattered up my paintwork!

Quick update on this

Went in for my paint thickness to be measured

Front door = 116 microns

Rear door = 143 microns :o A 25% increase.

Me thinks rear door damaged before delivery and repaired.

It would be a lot more than that if it had been repaired - about 200+ is what my wing was on my old car when they attempted to repair it.

id say its definitely been painted there wouldn't be different thickness of factory paint on 2 adjacent panels like that the robots that spay the cars in the factory are very accurate

did they check the paint thickness on the 1/4 panel

are skoda rectifying it for you

I thought doors were painted seperately to the rest of the vehicle, could explain the difference in spray thickness in that the doors have been painted by different robots at different times

Hi

Have to agree with fletch, does seem as though the rear door has been repaired and painted or the rear quarter has been repaired and they have blown across and lacquered out the door to match the colour.

The panel has not been repainted, otherwise it would be 200 to 300. its totally normal to have variations on panels, on my Mazda I has 80-120, on my current Skoda 110-150. Similar thing on BMWs. When you machine polish, its only unusual to fix a laser pen onto the surface to mark the spot where you take a reading, so you can see how much paint is removed. This is such that the panel can vary mm to mm. Hope that helps, Skoda should pay up.
