Front Axle Weight Class

Featured Replies

I recall some members trying to establish which particular weight range springs they should fit to their cars, so the following may be of interest.

My car is a 2002 Octavia 4X4 Estate

The 'plated' maximum permissible front axle weight is 1000 kg (2204 lbs) and the rear is 1070 kg (2359 lbs). These figures are on a sticker in the engine bay along with the VIN and are also in the Skoda Octavia Technical data booklet supplied with the car.

The car vehicle data sticker inside the front cover of the Service Schedule and on the boot floor lists the optional equipped fitted (or in some cases not fitted) to the car. Mine includes L50 - which decodes as:

Front axle weight class >> >> >> weight range: G34:686-735 KG.

Option codes for front axle weight class cover the range from L03 to L53. The decode for the 3 letter code is in the MSP-Pages in ETKA which dealers use to identify parts.

Using G34/L50 as a reference (and the chassis number), the dealer can identify the correct coil spring part number - 1J0 411 105 AN - which in this case is for models with heavy duty suspension - 1 paint mark (violet) and 3 paint marks (pink). G34 also identifies the correct shock absorber and the rubber stop for the shock absorber.

So, if you are thinking of lowering your car's suspension and want to know the spec of the original springs fitted, ask you friendly dealer.

My "friendly" dealer wants to void my warranty if I get new springs... :(

Not quite the first comment I expected, Jason, but you have my sympathy! :(

Cut a coil or 2 off the spring? At least they'll still be the original spring :D

Find another dealer?

Check out the praise the lowered thread - my report from another dealer's conversation is in there - I don't want to type it all out again... :D It was "kind of" good news

Or paint the new springs with the correct colour coding to confuse the dealer...
