Gearbox Or Wheel Bearing

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I Have a problem with a whining sound

When ever i am driving along doing bout 50mph in 5th gear i hear a whining sound, but only when i lift my foot of the gad pedal, it is coming from the front of the car at first i thought it was wheel a wheel bearing but it only happen in 5th gear, If u drop it in to 6th gear it stop. It stops when i put my foot down. tho

It only makes the sound at 2000rpm in 5th when foot of the gas pedal

So as it only happens in 5th gear could it be gearbox problem or is it just the wheel bearings

thanks

Oh and i Drive a Skoda fabia Vrs 2004 No modification totally standard.

dont know but if helps mine does same but when in 6th standard 56 vrs must be normal unless someone knows better

Check your gearbox oil level

I have heard of some polo's killing 5th gear bearings due to low oil levels.

back again just a quick test for wheel bearings jack up car so wheel is off ground and spin the wheel as fast as you can by hand and then touch the coil spring if you can feel a vibration or a rumble then its a bearing thats gone hope this helps ;)

Easy test, dip the clutch when it does it, if it stops it's the gearbox, if it stays it's a bearing. However a wheel bearing will never be noisy in only one gear. FWIW my 2007 SE has done this since I got it. Less in the winter when the gearbox oil would be thicker. Mine does it around the 1600 RPM mark, worst in 5th but also there faintly in 4th. I had Skoda check the oil level and listen to the noise, fairly common apparently.

It could also be the alternator clutch, as it works at specific torque loadings.

Most likely a shaft bearing in the gearbox but nothing to worry about unless it starts howling.

That was the 5 speed box with 5th gear that lived right at the top of the box. 6 speed is a different triple shaft box.

cheers for that mine does it until i dip the clutch but noise is very faint when it does do it will live with it unless it gets louder

Thanks for the help guys, I will get gearbox oil checked asap

Oh also gona jack the car up and check the wheel bearings

Thanks again

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi

My Fabia vRS (04, 48k miles (20k of those done in the last year since I had it - motorway commuter!) has been making a 'whirry' noise since it had new brakes & tyres in January. The garage has just confirmed it's coming from the gearbox rather than a wheel bearing, but can't quote for repair without taking the gearbox out to have a look :-(

The noise isn't limited to any gear (6sp box) and is worse when accelerating or deccelerating, regardless of whether clutch is down or not. Gear change and clutch performance seem ok (previously had a VW Bora that did 9yrs and over 100k with the original clutch/box so I don't think I'm too guilty of abusing them ;0)

Could it be something as simple as oil? However it has just passed it's MOT so am assuming it's not something too major. If it's not oil levels, how long can I carry on driving before I need to get it sorted? I'm due to start commuting again in a few weeks so will be back to doing 500 miles per wk.

Thanks

Our gearbox started making a loud grinding noise at 247k miles. Apparently a couple of bolts had loosened causing the transmission oil to drain out. The noise was very obvious - more noticeable than when the wheel bearings were wearing which give more of a loud hum than a grind.
